What are type of baits do you use and type of baits you want to use? Quit being a mad, little bald man!

Cody, you've ask the right people the right question. There are guys on here who know how to catch fish. Also, I just posted a story from the tournament at Amistad. I tried to put in what, where and how the pros caught them. Check it out. BassZone.com

Cody, my theory on worms and finesse bait is use the lightest line you can get away with for the cover you fish in with the lightest weights you can get away with. I often rig up with a heavy barrell swivel as my weight and a 4/0 hook like you are going to carolina rig but do not use any weight and cast to where I think the fish should be and just fish slow. This is deadly using 4"any size worms, senko's, flukes, and lizards. Add weight as needed depending on wind. My favorite colors have to be junebug, green pumpkin, baby bass, and white and kinda partial to Zoom worms for whatever reason. By far my favorite colored lizard is pumpkin seed/chartreuse tailed lizards. But usually it is all about what you have confidence in. Also, I've been a big fan of hooking worms up whacky style. You put the hook thru the middle of the worm with no weight and just twitch it a little and let it drop. Awesome on suspended fish in cover. I've never had any luck jig fishing or flipping or using tubes. Just something I have not done much. I'll leave that to someone else. Quit being a mad, little bald man!

Cody I'll need to show you how to finesse a plastic worm one of these weekends. You know I've got that down to a fine science at the Lago Boathouse LOL. By the way Happy Belated Birthday Amigo! |

I spent the last year learning how to fish a plastic worm. In the past I had zero luck on them, but knew they would work. I fished them texas rigged and carolina rigged and probably the best luck I have comes off the carolina rig and a junebug or pumpkin lizard. If I can get away with it, I fish it weightless otherwise it's the lightest weight I can get away with like Bigun said. I watched a interview with one of the japanese guys fishing bassmasters and he gave alot fo tips on fishing worms and different lures. One thing he said that stuck in my mind was if you fish a lizard or crawfish you have to make it move like they do in the water. You have to imagine what it is doing when you twitch it. I got in a shallow area where I could see the worm and watched what it did when I moved it and learned how to make it move as realistic as possible, or at least to me . Once I learned that, I started snagging fish everytime I went out to fish around the house. For crawfish I prefer the 3X Strike King worms. They float and when you rig it Texas style they pop up when you stop them. I just barley pull it up to move it a little and stop it. If there is grass or moss and I can figure out how deep it is to the bottom, I like to carolina rig them to where when the weight hits the bottom the worm is at the top of the grass so it looks like it's crawling on top. For the lizards, I just kind of drag them along a little like they are crawling around. I went from hating to throw a worm to loving them now. I also had good luck on a big Fat Albert grub as well in pumpkin seed. |

Great advice given so far on the soft plastics. I seriosly think that color is less important than presentation and location. As sluggo mentioned, make a lizard act like a lizard and make a craw act like a craw. Bigun is dead on about the lightest weight possible. I have found that fishing baits slowly is generally more productive. Sometimes it is not the case, but those times are less frequent. Bass are lazy for the most part and do not spend a whole lot of time looking for food. There are times that they are more aggressive than others, but for the most part they find some cover and wait for the food to come to them. This is why fishing cover is the most productive -- in general -- way to catch bass. Cover is not limited to grass or trees, it also includes rocks and bottom changes (ledges). Hope this helps some... Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Also, I would say you have got to move! You probably already know that, but at the house I watch people everyday who just don't move. I didn't see the ponds when they built them but they are 4 acres in size and I don't think there is any trees or anything like that submerged in them, but there is alot of moss and grass in the summer. Nearly everybody that fishes out there walks up to the bank farthest from the grass and moss as they can get and starts fishing. They might catch one or two but that's it and they stand in the same spot and wear it to the dirt pitching a lure to the same spot in the lake and reeling it in. I catch a mess of fish, but I take a bag or two of worms in my pocket with a couple extra hooks just in case and a pair of pliers and throw a couple times take a couple steps, throw a few times, take a few steps, always moving. If the fish ain't where you are, you've got to go to the fish. I've never bass fished from a boat before, but it's the same way a boat fisherman eases down a bank with the trolling motor. You can pull a few fish from one spot, but after a few tries of nothing, move on to the next spot and give it a go there. I'm no pro by any means, but that's what has worked for me. If I am full of it, let me know. I'm a learner too! (Message edited by Sluggo on March 16, 2006) |

For the most part, you are right Sluggo... There are times that the bass are moving around and staying in one spot is a very productive method but typically moving around is the best way to locate the fish and catch fish -- great advice...
