for those of you that fish the coast for Reds and Trout what line would you recommend. I am ordering a 7 1/2 foot St. Croix Rod (they sponser my brother and I can get really good deals on them) and will be using a lews baitcaster. since I don't fish anywhere near the amount of time I spend in the woods I just don't keep up with the new products on the market. I curently use Berkley big Game in 14 lb. test. Just in case I hook into a monster red, but the line has been on for a while and since I need to buy more I thought I would see what else was on the market that was actually any good. Thanks in Advance and good fishing.

I'd stick with Big Game. That's what I have been using for years. I've tried others but always go back to big game.

Will I've been casting P-Line X-Tra Strong clear in 10lb test. So far it's worked great and recovers very well with small line diameter. Some lines don't recover well after a few good fights, this line stays the course and it's tough as well.

I only use Big game or Triplefish camo. Can't go wrong with either Will. Good luck

I have used Big Game and Triple fish. I like them both. I have used Gamma line this year and I really like it.

Will, I am a Big Game user as well. I tried McCoys & Cajun Red last year and went back to the BG quickly. I have been using it since 1993 I believe and it just continues to prove itself over and over again.

A 12 - 15 pound test should be more than you need on the coast unless you are fishing oysters. :-)
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

PowerPro in 30lb test with a 10ft mono top shot is what some are using along the coast now. I've used Ande for years for the simple fact you never know if you might make IGFA along the coast on some species and it's rated to break at or less than the breaking strength of the line.

I tried P-Line on a couple of reels this year. So far so good but it's not IGFA rated and I may go back to Ande. Never know if and when you might catch the world record hardhead LOL!

Clear water I cast 8lb. Off color water or at night I cast 10 or 12. The 8lb test has really made a big difference for wading the Upper Laguna through the years. Get a little more distance, less drag in the wind and lower line visibility when the trout or snook (near Port Mansfield jetties) get finicky but I change line very often and carry extra spools when I take extended trips.

I don't necessarily need strength as much as I need stealth. I tie straight to the lure, no leaders or snap swivels.

Surf fishing the big rods, they all get PowerPro in 65lb test. I don't top shot, tie straight up to a 10ft 350lb test steel leader and yak the bait offshore. The feedback on big fish is unreal using PP. No line stretch and I can feel sharks banging their head on sandbars trying to break free from the hook as well as jaw snaps and sudden turns etc.. I've gone exclusively to circle hooks on the big rigs and my hookup ratio is over 90% now. Steady pull is all it needs vice a J hooks (hookset). Less apt to gut hook fish which lets them fight another day.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like no reason to switch from Big Game. I may spool one with the P-line xtra strong just to try something different. I too have been using Big Game forever. Just thought there might be something new on the market that was better. Of course the old sying does go if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I'm back remembering why I hate Berkley big game in 12 lb test! It pops in the spool to much!!! I'm going back to my Triplefish or Quatropro after I use this 4700 yd spool of BG I just bought. I like big game in the large diameters but man that 12lb test is eating me up having to respool after each weekend of fishing.

I had some problems with it as well BigUn. I make it a bad habit to bite my line to remove lures during the heat of the moment and this P-Line Xtra-Strong is tough stuff. I can't bite it as well as BG and lean on snips now. The teeth don't lie :-)
