This is directed towards you saltwater fella's. I've have always wanted to go after some redfish, especially some bulls. I'd like to try and take my 12yr old this summer. Is there a particular month that is better?, suggestions on guides and what area? thanks

I can't help you with Texas but would pretty much think it would be pretty standard. The bull red (25-40 lbs) fishing stays pretty steady in the passes all summer long in S La with August and September seeming to be the time when they start migrating hard thru the passes. All bottom fishing with crabs with 7000 ABU's on stiff rods. I've never been much on doing this type of fishing but I can see the thrill behind it especially when they are ON!!! :-)

If you want to sight cast to redfish in the skinny you can't get no better than Mid June to end of July around here usually.

If you want to stay in Texas take this guy out. My dad, 2 brothers, and I take him out at least once every year and have never been dissapointed. He knows where to catch fish and how to catch them.

Hawlin Bass, the best month is September (late) and October. Let's plan a trip this fall and go down and get it done.

Typically during the summer months redfish get off the beach and at the ends of the jetties deep. Port Aransas has a year round bullred school and if you trailer the boat down, the end of the South Jetty with cut or live bait deep score bullreds on and off. September into March they are there in large numbers.

These reds were caught during October 28 - 30 2005. The night time bull red was a brute and I had to shoot this pic by myself. Wished I had more time to hold him better but you can get an idea of his length. Released them all to catch another day.

Each one of these reds were caught by casting from the sand into the 1st and 2nd guts with cut mullet. I use a fish finder mono leader (80lb test) with a 6 ounce spider weight to hold the sand. I found using circle hooks really help with hookups on rods that are hit sitting in the sand spike. Just enough tension on the line as they rip line off the reel and the hook hits the corner of the mouth. Using J-Hooks require you to set the hook and if the rod lights off with you 20 or 30 yards away many times you miss the hook set. Circles in the 14/0 size literally eliminate missed hook sets. Works well with big sharks too.

I agree with Rob and I do not know anything about LA other than there are a lot of coons down there.. :-) and to them - being skunked means an average day in Galveston...

I am not a guide but fish galveston frequently. Come Sep or preferably Oct I can bo bought for the price of some bait and a few gallons of gas! (actually this holds true for almost all year)

I have used a few guides in Galveston but have not been impressed. For me, what they charge is too much different from what it cost me to go on my own and I usually do better than they do. (usually)
