I woke up - looked out side and said this will be the day... Checked the weather and everything looked exelent! Light north wind changing to southwest as the day goes - seas 1-2ft - clear skies - Called a friend Dan to see if he wanted to go off shore and he was in for the game - Awsome!! Took care of my responsibilities around here and got to the ramp around in Galveston around 10am. We went to the first hole about 13mi out. We cought a few small snapper and 1 keeper. Had a free line off the back and a King blew up on it but the king fish were not really happening either. Wewere watching the porpus eat the small snapper when we released them but decided to head out further. We fished some weed beds and cought a few bait fish and moved on. At about 29 miles the watter was really calm and we decided to fish a stem and see what was holding - good decision. As we tied up we saw several ling and one of them was really big. We threw everything at them but they would not eat. We landed a few King Fish in this process.

Finally I tossed a Cigar minnow at the big one and it ate! I Hooked! And it was ON! I was quite concerned though because I had my trout rod in my hand with a small ambassador reel on it strung with 20lb line.

I was afraid it would wrap around the rig so we unhooked the boat from the rig and drifted away. 30 minutes later -

Finally after about 45 minutes of waiting, lifting, pulling, watching, lifting, chasing, lifting, pulling -- we got it up to the boat. It took both of us to lift it into the boat.

After this we headed back to the rig to see if any oof the others were still around but they were no where to be seen. I did catch a shark -

And we managed a few more Kings making out limit -

Stopped in at the jetties on the way in and cought a small mess of trout and spanish mackerel fishing until dark. Today I will get the final pic and count of the entire days work..

There were many other highlights of the day.

BTW - The ling weighed in at 49lbs and they tell me it probably lost 5lbs or so in the box. Definately my biggest catch of my life to date!

Awesome Dean. 29 miles WOW!

I love ling fishing. Dean you need to save some 8-9" white trout when you catch them, freeze them, and throw them on a big jig when you find the ling. No better bait other than a live one. People tell you live catfish but they will absolutely destroy white trout in a heartbeat. Live one's hook right on the top edge of the back and they will act just like a crankbait when you pull on them. Maybe one of these days it will calm down enough to catch a limit of trout on the beach and head out to the 7 mile structures to hook up into some (as far as I'm going in my bay boat).

Final tally!

1 BIG Ling
12 Spanish Mackerel
4 Kingfish
6 speckled trout
3 red fish
1 Red Snapper
1 Vermillion Snapper
A bunch of throw backs

Wade, Dan is a very seasoned off shore fisherman. He has done it professionally and has been out probably as many times as you have fished the back bays. I feel very confident with him on board. NO WAY I'd do this on my own.... Conditions were right also - almost perfect.

Wade - would white trout be the same as sand trout? Thanks for the tips!!

I found out that someone weighed in a 87lb ling yesterday also ---I can not imagine catching something like that..

Dean, I don't blame you due to you definitely had the right conditions. Just to far for my own personal self. Got plenty of friends who would be right on the side of you.

White trout and a sand trout is the same thing. I've caught a couple 80 lb ling and they are some fun. There is nothing like spot stalking ling in my book. To watch them come up in a pack behind the boat and hit a live swimming trout is amazing. The silver scales go everywhere! Kind of gives me the chills. I gotta get out there. Come on wind, quit blowing.
