Well the 2nd annual gathering of BS'rs hit PINS for a little Man Country surf fishing action. This crew essentially represented a mix of experienced and newbies all in one camp setting.

My son Austin and I got a late start Friday evening. Left Austin blazing to beat sundown. Rolled into Fish Camp at 32 miles right at sunset. Pitched the tent and rigged it for sleep, jumped on my light tackle casting rod and immediately caught a nice bull whiting. Perfecto! Rigged my 10.5ft Fenwick custom and decided to go big so tossed on the Daiwa 600H (Penn 6/0 clone with more line cap). Kayaked out 350 yards off the sand, night time, full moon, excellent surf condtions and planted the 11ft Sevalon custom leader over the side. Bait and line checked with an 8 ounce spider weight. Surf the yak back in, just settling into a nice comfortable chair and ZZZZZZZZZZZZIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!I let the fish run approximately 100 yards of line, lock my drag down to fighting tension and lean. Line continues to run down beyond half spool (1200 yards total line cap) and keeps on running and running and running

So I hand the rod over to Drifter

and then over to BarnacleBill

and it gets handed again

and again

and again

heck even the first time to the beach crowd get a turn (Cambo)

Well after a little over an hour of fight, pulling like a freight train we finally tail rope the beast....

to find a left pectoral fin foul hooked blacktip shark. I'm sold on circle hooks! Even misses have a chance if they find something on missed slides. Explains the brute power of this fight, no control over the sharks head and side to the beach hold offs with a lot of hard surges.

A team gathering on shark number one

Released to grow to fight again

Well this had a few of the younger crowd worn out and many hit their tents. Hillbillie scores another whiting for the big rod and I run offshore for another set. This time we have a little break time to relax and just enjoy the full moon and sound of the surf.

Then the first scene repeats itself with another healthy ZZZZZZZZZZIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGG!!!! It's 0300 and FISH ON! Once again I set the drag and we are hooked up. This fish literally had us worn completely out. 2 solid hours of fighting, swapping the rod between less on the beach. At 0515 we finally see a nice shark in the clear water cutting through the lights. Once again another foul hooked blacktip and this one has the 14/0 circle in it's anal fin. Fought this fish from the power side the entire fight and it certainly had us perplexed an hour into battle. Just didn't feel right in so many ways LOL!

BarnacleBill with a pose before release.

At this point we knew it's time for some much needed sleep and everyone clears the beach.

The next morning the only other big fish action was one good sized Southern Sting Ray.

Course the newbies in camp were fine with any old shark but, I know the night before will be a memory for years to come. A few more dumplins in that young man and he might have some counter-balance to hang with the big stuff LOL!

I spent the mid day hitting the yak offshore with light casting tackle. Managed one big pompano (RattleTrap), 7 jackfish (Traps & spoons) and one spanish mackerel (spoon). On the beach, small sharks and whiting made up for slow fishing. MickeyT's son managed to catch one cobia on a jig offshore in a yak. Came in and stated "I don't know what this is but it was fun!"
Dinner, fajitas, axis, sausage and redfish on the halfshell. BarnacleBill is the best beach side cook any fish camp can ask for outside Coonie Country. BigUn owns the roost over there on the other side of the Sabine River. :-)

Camp was cozy enough in spite of the remote/primitive conditions.

Well everyone decided to pack out Saturday evening leaving Austin and I on the sand. We didn't score anymore sharks and I was too beat to really give things awhirl after sundown. The next day was spent soaking baits throughout the morning on the big stuff. And a couple dozen ladyfish (poor man's tarpon) and jackfish on light tackle on plugs and spoons.

All in all this was an excellent gathering of old and new friends.

Till next time.....SON!

The circus midget has been promoted to ring leader!
Great job Rob showing them boys how to have fun in the sand (if that is possible).
Quit being a mad, little bald man!
