I have an opportunity to pick up an 80lb thrust MinnKota TM. The boat i fish out of now has an older Motor Guide Tm on it now.

My question is, how different is the mounting alignment on the two? Will the holes for the gator mount match up? If not, how much difference is there?

I feel like I'm getting a good deal on the MinnKota but not if I have to put more holes in the boat to mount it.

Any suggestions?

Dru,

Don't know the answer. Contact Bob Ridgeway at Ridgeway Marine Repair (214.630.8161). He does electronic repairs for MK and MG. He should be able to tell you.

Let me know how you like the MK after you used for a while. I have a MG now and it's a POS. Been thinking of switching myself.

Maybe you could drill holes in troll motor bracket to match would be my answer. I know I did that once with one of my boats. If not, on my last boat I got like a treated 1x6 and mounted it to the boat using old holes and then screwed the troll motor down on top of it.

If you do not want the MK, let me know and I might get it. I would like to replace my lighter weight TM with a little more power.

Ask for deminsions... I would hate to tell you it would fit the same and be wrong.

Bigun is probably on the right page with the modification. Worst case, if it is a great deal then you should be able to offload it without a problem if it does not fit easily.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

My experience is that MK's are the bomb over MG's but I recommend to stay away from the 3x's steering ones. They have a little plastic gear in them that directs the direction arrow light that constantly breaks plus they constantly slip on the litte lock key when you have to adjust it up and down. Kind of a pain in the arse!!!

Thanks Guys. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. The holes will not match up and I really don't want to mess with weakening the fiberglass by drilling more holes.

Mike it is a good deal an if I can not figure a way to make it work then I'll let you know.

Can you lay your hands on an 80 lbs thrust Motor Guide? We can swap.

Wade, I used to think Minn Kota was the way to go but I think Motor Guide has fixed whatever the promblem was and they are now pretty reliable.

Thanks for the help and I'll keep you posted.

My experience with MG's is it is a great product until you get them in the skinny grassy mud which most freshwater people don't have to deal with. They just don't have the pulling power the MK's had in the shallow grassy areas I fish with the same lb thrust and same boat. Maybe they have improved this, not sure.

Negative!

I have a MG that is ywo years old this month. It has been in the shop for repair six times and is about to go back in. I'm wanting to switch to MK but having the same challange as you. I don't want to drill any more holes in the fiberglass.

Solution: I have the itch for a different boat:-) Told my wife last night if she gets to buy a new computer desk I get to buy a new boat!

Another thing you may want to look at. They are now making those face plates where you can actually remove the troll motor off the boat. I'll bet you could adapt them to work and just put a locking device on it. They cost around $70 if I remember right.
