Well I needed a new baitcast reel and really upset by all my friends not so favorable reports on the new Curado's and my not so favorable personal review of a Chronarch. My Chronarch is a smooth throwing reel but just not real pleased with casting distance. On top of I was looking for a little more cranking power to put on my heavy Fenwick rod I redfish with. After much determination I went with the ABU Record. Rob's excited right now!!! :-) Will give you my review next weekend.

Quality craftmanship right there. With the numbers you put in the boat anything less would be trashed in a week.

It took a little adjusting to get it to stop backlashing (mainly because when I strung it up did not get the line tight enough) but once I got the string right and the adjustments micro'ed out it worked flawlessly. Very, very smooth, consistant drag. Throws well and far. Still has the ABU tension when reeling which is hard to get used to use after using the easy reeling of the Shimano's. Is going to be an excellent redfishing reel if will last. Overall rating is a 9 out of 10 for the first day of fishing.

Forgot to put the fishing report in. Went scouting in the gatortail today. Lots of redfish in very skinny water. If the water is deeper than 8" there are not reds in it. Simply amazing how they are mudding themselves down. You actually have to get on top of them to make them move. Once spooked there are no catching them. However can't complain to much since we had our ten fish 8:00 or so and could have easily been faster if we would have kept drifing one area but elected to go ride to check out other areas. I actually had my five fish in the first drift of one pond.

Skinny water redfish would be a whole lot of fun... Glad you are liking the reel and ya'll knocked out some reds.

Connie is hoping I get some redfish when we run to the coast so I can grill some on the half shell.

Still impressed with the Record. Still a little finicky wanting to backlash a little but I have got it to where it starts to backlash about 1/2 way thru the throw and then works itself out. The drag is absolutely wonderful on it though. Can really put the pressure on the fish unlike the smaller Shimano's. I originally strung it with 14 lb test but wondering if I don't need to go back to 12.

Had Phillip's Services offshore division and customers in Saturday and Sunday wanting to catch redfish. Tide went absolutely flat from Friday to Saturday with them calling for two tenth's for Sat and Sun. Did not catch limits but mainly only due to plenty of lost fish for this reason and that. Think we had a dozen fish with a few drum threw in both Saturday and Sunday. Gerald caught his three man limit Saturday and 9 Sunday. They told us this was more fish than they wanted to catch after they started cleaning them. :-) Had the camera in the truck and kept forgetting to put it in the boat. Sorry. Until next weekend.

I fished it a little while this morning and it does throw better with the 12 lb test I think. Thanks.

I'm throwing 10lb test. The Records drag is rated at 13lbs sustained. Too bad they don't make a 6500 on this frame? I'd move to a 10ft rod and throw 3 oz lures in the surf on 12lb mono and back that with braid. Lightweight Tarpon and King Mac setup right there.
