I've know for a while that I should be keeping a fishing log but haven't. This is on my short list of things to start doing. My questions is how do you do it? Keep track of it in Excel, word or is their a program one can purchase that you would recommend? Any and all thoughts are welcomed. Thanks! |

You could start by posting all of the pertinant information here and then come back and do a search... Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Good one Mike. Charles I'm using excel. Set up the different lakes and the divide by time of the year. Here is a link to an example of a log http://bassresource.com/fish/fishing_log.html BassZone.com

Dru, that is a nice log and would be very beneficial. I keep it all in my head but fish always stack up in the same places around here year after year and usually it is all about finding where the bait is. I guess my head is full of fishing info and that is why I have trouble remembering my kids name when I'm telling them to do something! Quit being a mad, little bald man! And the camera. You keep forgeting the camera. I don't use the log the way I should. Talking with some of the pros, they keep one everyday of every fish with illustrations, time, weather, lake level..... I'm sure it would be a great tool if done right. BassZone.com

I've been remembering the camera lately but my rechargeable batteries apparently are going bad. Seems like they are always dead. Quit being a mad, little bald man! Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic.

By the time I get off the water I do not feel like taking the time to do it either. Boat to clean, fish to clean, work to catch up on.... I think of keeping a log but I really don't have too much trouble working out of my head. Conditions vary so much in the bay that each time is somewhat a new experience and past experience helps to put it all together. Usually I don't know what my conditions are until I get there - then I have to decide. An exel spread sheet or any paper log would be difficult to manage and to laminate 100s of pages would not be time or cost effective. It is all about the fisherman/woman. Experience can prevail. BUT - fishing on a lake might be different. Perhaps there are more feeding patterns to follow and to know when the spawn is might be adventageous. My 2 cents worth. All In A Days Fun!!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I started a excel template. So far I have a tab for each month. My thoughts are to be able to click a month enter pertinant information and save. Than I can go back and review. |

Dean, you hit it on the head for bay fishing. Most of the time when I leave the dock in the morning I have no idea where I'm going to start at. I usually decide after I get across the lake putting in wind direction, strength, and tide factors to decide. I feel lake fishing would be quite a bit different also. I normally figure out where to go and what to do when I arrive at the lake also. But the purpose of the log is to see what you have done in the past under similar conditions. For example, In my log for this past weekend I put down that I caught nine fish from Italys Sock in 16 to 18' of water. Threw a Crig watermelon candy centipede. Water temp 84, stained and wind was blowing from the south about 10mph. I have that in a tab marked July. I can now go back to this next year and see what worked in July with a south wind. |

Nice work Charles. I know those old salts keep it all upstairs but it helps me to look back at past performances and try to determine what will work best. Wade you should keep track of all your days on the water. You have to be on a record pace. The first time I went to Canada my uncle made us keep a journal. We would each take turns writing down what, where and how the day progressed. At the time I thought it was silly. It's been about 10 years ago and I would love to see that thing and read (re-live) that experience. My feeble brain can barely keep up with what happened today. I need all the help I can get. My record pace was set while I initially pretended to be in college! Don't think I missed a day....of fishing of course. I did end up buckling down and finishing college though thank the almighty. I tell people all the time I wish I would have tracked all the fish I caught at that time period. I was 5x a better fisherman back then than I am now and it was a lot better fishing back then also. Fishing has become cool since that time period and the loss of land due to erosion and just the pure people pressure with the invention of bayboats (made it comfortable and cool) and GPS (they can actually make it back to the landing now) has really made a big difference around here in just the last twenty years. Forgot to mention, I do keep a calendar now and they all read (until the last few weekends anyway): fishing/limited reds. Quit being a mad, little bald man! Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic.
