We just moved to a new neighborhood in Rosharon Texas that has a 23 acre lake or pond. Do we have to purchase a fishing license to fish there? Lisa |

First off Lisa, welcome to the ramp! You question is a good one and one that I am reluctant to answer quickly. The law is that you must have a license to fish on "Public" waters. A license is not required to fish on private stock tanks and such. My question about your situation is, can the subdivision lake be considered a public body of water? Hopefully Justin chimes in because he has a similar situation with his subdivision. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

At my subdivision we don't have to have one. I have always heard that if it's privatley owned, you don't need a fishing license. It works out great cause I can take out of town and out of state visitors, people who probably wouldn't fish another day of the year, fishing around the house and we don't have to worry about licenses. Welcome to the board! |

Welcome to the site Lisa! I don't think you are required to have a license to fish private lakes unless the State stocked it. I would check with your HOA (if their is one) or contact the local game warden for clarification. Better to be safe than sorry. |

Like others have said, you shouldn't need a fishing license to fish a private lake. However, you need a hunting license if you want to go frog gigging on a private lake?!? Go figure.... Welcome! Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.
