Well, after missing all of October without getting in the woods my hunting is about to get kicked into high gear. My first hunt is next week. I'm heading to Stringtown OK to hunt the WMA across from the prison. I'm planning on leaving Monday morning and staying the week. I may go back for a couple of days the following week if I'm seeing good deer.

My second hunt will be on Hagerman Nov. 17th. I saw I nice 10 pt scouting the other day and hope to find him again in a couple of weeks.

I'm ending the month down in Mason for my annual trip to the Homer Martin Ranch. Hopefully I'll have good stories and good pictures to share when I get back. I'll try to keep ya'll updated between trips.

Good hunting/fishing to all that get to go.

I should be in Kansas on the 17th. My brother is up there right now and they are seeing quite a few deer but nothing big. No milo cut yet and he said they are starting to push some does. Hopefully they will be full smack rutting when I get there and the milo will be gone!

Good luck mark. Talked to several people from durant that have been hunting and they said the bucks were starting to chase some. Just be careful about walking in on someones "patch". You know how it is up there.

I talked to my brother last night in Ks and the deer sightings came to screeching halt after Sat afternoon when the weather warmed up. Wishing you better luck Tex. Go get 'em.

Here goes my first hunt report. It started off promising when I saw some deer in my hunting area on the first evening. The next morning was even better when a big 10 pt buck came in after a doe. I could have shot the doe but passed in hopes that the buck would present a shot. The doe decided to leave the area and took the buck with her before I could get a shot. I new this was a top notch buck for public land so I was disapointed that I didn't get a shot.

The next evening and morning were slow and I didn't see a deer so I relocated to a draw about 100 yards from where I had been hunting. I came in and found my partner had shot an 8 pointer. Here's a pic of his buck.

Kyle's buck

That evening I had a doe come through late but she took a trail that I didn't have a lane cut. I heard another deer following and found a nice buck walking the same trail. I new he would follow the same path as the doe so I found a small opening and let an arrow fly when he walked through. I think I was looking at the brush more than the deer and the shot sailed high. I didn't see any deer on the next 3 hunts so I left out friday afternoon disappointed.

After spending a couple of days with the family I got up early sunday morning and headed back hoping the cooler weather would have them moving. I was excited to see 2 young bucks come in at first light but the next 3 hours did not produce any deer. At 9:30 the wind was blowing so hard I couldn't hear anything and I was starting to get hungry so I decided to head back to camp. After lowering my bow I reached for my backpack and looked down to see my big 10 point walking by at 5 yards. A true gimme shot and my bow is hanging at the bottom of my tree. I didn't know whether to cry or throw up.:-) I was sick to my stomach. I went ahead and got down since I new I had missed my opportunity.

I got back in the stand early at 1:30 hoping more big bucks would be moving. I had a couple of does come in at 4:00 and I shot one but was disappointed to see I had hit her back. I hoped that I clipped her lung and liver. While giving her time I waited to see if a buck would show. At 4:50 a nice little 9 point came in and I took a 20 yard shot. He ran about 50 yards before going down. I gave the doe another hour before getting down but would could not find hardly any blood. We looked hard that night and the next day but could not locate her. I was disappointed to not find her but I was glad to finally have a deer. Here's a couple of pics of the buck.

I decided to head on back the next day. I was happy with the amount of deer I saw. For public land there is a pretty good deer population. Although I didn't get the big buck I was happy with the one I got. Hagerman is coming up this weekend so hopefully I will have some more pictures with deer in them.

Here's a few more pics from the trip.

Nice Job Tex. Public hunting is difficult and rewarding at the same time. Good luck on the Hag.

Hagerman was a bust. I didn't see a deer for the first day and a half. I move to a new location and an hour after being in the stand I saw the biggest buck of my life. He come by at 40 yards but was in some thick cover and wouldn't respond to any of my calls. Turns out there was a couple of guys that had seen him and were after him in that area. I never saw him again after that. I did have a shot at a nice little 7 point but passed since I already had a deer this year and hoped the big one would show again. I got down after the morning hunt and nearly walked into a young 8 point at the road. I got down and tried to nock an arrow before he got to me but I wasn't quick enough. That evening was slow and nothing showed until dark.

I heard of a few nice bucks being turned in but didn't get a look at them. Hopefully my luck will continue next year and I'll get drawn again.
