Wade - I misplaced your email address and phone number.

Did you say you are close to LaRose? I want to check the Ranger out that is over there. How far is La Rose from Houma? Do you think it would be a day trip for me to go and come back?

My biggest concern is the engines. Is anyone familiar with these engines as far as reliability, efficiency, and longevity?

They are Mercury motors... What else needs to be said, other than the reminder that Merc's have historically been horrible in salt water. Maybe they have overcome the issues they use to have.

Rediculious to make a day trip when you have family in Houma you could stop over and get a great meal, great conversation, and ice cold beer. Take the whole family and make a weekend of it.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

larose is about 30-45 minutes SE of the house. Come on down. Me and the kids will be gone most of the next month in Kansas but Denise and her family will be around. Email address is biguncharter@aim.com

I'm not a mercury fan but a lot of people are. You have any clue who owns the boat? I can ask around about it.

Thanks for the invite!! We'd love to! Lets play it by ear!

The broker is not saying anything. When I want to make an appointment to see it she will make the arrangment. I don't like not being able to contact the seller before driving down there. What to do....

I checked out the new Grady and a 25' center console with twin 150 Yamaha 4 strokes was $94K pluss trailer and rigging. NO WAY! NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

It is hard to find a good used boat with resourceful configuration. Even the Grady lacks the longer/larger fish box I know will be needed out there.

I looked at the 24' Whaler which I kinda like but again - $95K with trailer pluss rigging. I heard the older Whaler rides very rough in rougher conditions. I do not know about the new hull though.

I looked at the new Sea Hunt but I do not have that sense of it being a solid boat. The hull seems OK but the accessories and hardware seem dainty. A 26'er with twin 4 strokes is still $78K.

I looked at the Mako - $78Kish + Stil seems kinda weak and I have heard they have not brought the quality up to what it was before Mako was bought out. I saw one in the lot with a BIG blister/bubble in/under the gel coat.

I know I need twins because I plan to go 60+ miles out.

I guess I need to look for Yamaha engines. Any knowlege about the OX66 series of Yamaha? I had a mechanic and another mechanic say that they thought the OX66 series of Yamaha engines had a high failure rate on the power heads?

Any Ideas Anyone?

Last time I took the Ranger out the Tach, Trim Guage, Other guages, and front live well quit working on me. I only went bay fishing! The time before I took it out and the rear live well went out. Absolutely insane. Wade - Do you have consistent issues with your boats? Is this something everyone goes through? or am I just unlucky................

Dean, I'm not sure I've ever known anyone who has had so many major problems with a new boat in my life. Boats are holes for your money to go in though and seems like something minor always needs fixed.

I know I would never deal with Travis Marine. My buddy bought a suzuki through them. The motor blew up at 2yrs. Suzuki was going to warrant it until the mechanic says that the sparkplugs were improperly (were only hand tight) originally causing improper pre-ignition spark causing the powerhead failure. Would be kind of a tough one for me to swallow!

Don't know anything about ox66 series either. Sorry.

Very tough decision I think you have.

I've had my boat for 21/2 years and have not had near the problems you are having with your Ranger.
The biggest problem I have experienced is with my trolling motor.

I'm with Bigun on Travis Marine. They don't have very solid reputation for "rigging" or "servicing" boats.

Not trying to tell you what to do but I would never buy a used boat with out a reputable marine mechanic perform an inspection and gave me his blessing that the boat is in good shape.

Good luck in your search.

I saw a Wellcraft 25 with a cuddy at the yacht basin. I called them and they said the boat was hardly used. It has twin Yami and looked really good. They said they just re-appolstered the whole thing and spent 2500 doing it. They are asking 42K. I do not remember the year model. I am not sure I want a cuddy though.

I really like the 9' beam though.

I was told that Ron Hoover Marine has a 27 Procat I want to look at. Maybe they might give me a fair trade value for the Ranger against the ProCat..

My Friend at ReelThreel uses a 29' Pro-cat and I love that boat - lots and lots of space and 10' beam!

Thanks for any feedback you all can give. I am faced with a difficult task ahead of me. The more info I have the better.

Have heard good things about the procats but have never road in one. $42K for a 25' Wellcraft cuddy sounds kind of steep. Assuming this one is new. There are a bunch of those old 25' Wellcraft cuddy boats floating around down here it seems like.
