Day 2 of the youth hunt started out slow but with a beautiful sunrise.

We did not see any deer this morning but I believe part of that had to do with the duck hunters that were just 200 or so yards away from us -- based on the sounds of the gunshots. We decided to get out of the stand early and do some scouting. Here is a picture of the Matrix in BW like it would look to a deer. I think it blends in quite well without even brushing it up.

The pond we had set up by apparently had some residents that were neat to see. On day 1 we saw the smallest one but today we saw 4 gators. They are all babies but still neat to see them and Jessica really liked it.

We found a good looking area and set the blind up in preparation for the evening hunt. I corned the road heavy where we could shoot and a thin line of corn leading up to our shooting area. We left out of there, got some lunch, and I took a nap before getting back into the stand around 4:00pm.

It was hot this afternoon sitting in a pop-up but the steady wind helped. Apparently, Jessica should have taken a nap with me because she could not stay awake in the blind.

This little guy hung out in front of us for a while also so I snapped a shot of him.

At about 5:30 I saw a deer cross in front of us about 100 yards out. I woke up Jessica but by the time she opened her eyes the deer was gone. I grunted a few times hoping to bring her in and about 10 minutes later she re-appeared and looked at the blind. Looking at the road where I had lightly corned I saw a fawn feeding towards the us and where the doe was standing. She calmed down and started feeding where I put the heavy corn down and we readied for the shot.

Jessica was nervous and I tried to talk her through it. She finally calmed down and and squeezed trigger. Unfortunatly, she missed. We looked all over the area for blood, hair, flesh, anything as a sign of a hit but we could not find anything. The funny part was after the shot... She started trembling and shaking and talking jibberish -- it was funny... :-)

I'm happy we saw some deer and she actually finally pulled the trigger on a deer. We will crawl back into that blind in the morning and see what happens.

Congrats to Jessica on at least being able to pull the trigger. Will be much easier to succeed next time. Great pictures Mike. Keep 'em coming.

Mike just called me and it sounds like Jessica may have a story for us this morning . Hoping for the best to them.

Great news. Can't wait to see the details.

The good news is we had a great time. Apparently the shot on Sunday morning was a miss. I took some video and working on getting it online so a day 3 report will come later. It has been a long time since I laughed that hard in the deer blind.

Oh... and you know the statement, "kids say the darndest things..."? Had one of those moments on Sunday also.

Day three?

Great recap so far. There is nothing like post-shot jibberish. I think I still do that.
