The drive up there was long but we finally arrived after many mishaps I will not get into due to bringing embarrassment on my part. But we arrived early Fri AM, I took a nap, and off to find my Uncle to get a tag. After getting his permission off to Pratt, Ks I went (the last thing I feel like doing is driving an hour there and back) but I'll do anything to bowhunt Kansas. Got back to my dad's around 4:30 pm and my mom tells me dad had stopped by and wants me to go down to where they are cutting milo. They put me on the combine and about 1/2 way through the farmer tells me to keep my eyes open. We almost immediately jumped a doe and a huge 8 pt buck. Now this buck is wore out from chasing that doe and will not get out of the way of the combine! The farmer is begging me to shoot it due to he wants to see archery in action. But the tag is not good until the next day and not good for his land so I decline. Ended up seeing 5 more deer that afternoon riding the combine.

Woke up Sat AM to high hopes but no deer are spotted for me at less than 300 yds until Mon AM when 9 does walk a 1/2 mile down a fencerow in cut milo to 12 yds from me. The lead doe was huge and I start to pull back but stick the leading cutting edge of the BH pokes thru shoot thru meshing and it will not come out. The doe turns upon my getting the BH out of the mesh and starts walking back to my right. A quick re-adjustment and I let the Rocky Mountain Supreme tipped arrow fly. Upon impact she acted like I broke her front leg and is just hobbling to my right and within 40 yds does a face dive, partially stands back up, and falls over for the last time. Well one of the does stays at 30 yds from me and I'm thinking I should take her out too but then thinking about the work in front of me decide better. Was my normal a little to far back on the shoulder hit but the Rocky Mountain Supreme really did a great job taking her out getting double lungs and liver. Arrow went in on a huge angle and just really devasted her inside. She was huge and my dad thinks she went about 160 lbs but I really imagine she was closer to 140 lbs. You can decide. I'm 6'0 and 330 lbs on man! :-) Deboned she completely filled up a 48 qt ice chest.

Did a lot more hunting with no action at all other than seeing deer riding around at times. There are some huge bucks around but they have transitioned from bedding in once uncut milo to the CPR grass and stay way out in the middle of the fields. Not much way of hunting these creatures archery wise except to get lucky being in the right spot when they decide to cross fields. Of course I have no luck.

Thanksgiving morning finds me hunting back where I shot my first doe. At first light I look up and see bodies heading at me everywhere. I counted 15 does close and three small bodied deer further away. This is the most deer I've ever seen together in Kansas and just amazed. The biggest doe feeds to my right but I set up wrong in the popup and don't want to scare the rest of the deer so wait on the other good size doe to clear my left window and let the Steelforce tipped arrow fly. Thwaacck is heard and she jumps the fence and runs back where she comes from with a melee of deer but never see her come over the next hill. I decided to stay in the popup this morning and wait to see if any bucks show up. About a 1/2 hr later I have an 8pt come thru but he is a young deer and rack is way inside of ears. I get out around 9:30 and walk up on the hill she ran to and there she is laying in the valley. Great feeling! Another hard angling hit taking out a lot of but this one was quite a bit higher on the back. I really need to start forcing myself to shoot lower and closer to the shoulder but can't complain on the final results. She was close to the same size as the one Monday but a little smaller. But I'm still overjoyed.

No more deer where spotted by me Th afternoon or Friday. I can't wait to go back next week with the guys to cut up a little and see if I can't bring that bigun down now that I've filled my doe permits.

My kids had the normal great time at Grandpa's. Riding the three and four wheeler is the normal joy of fun. This year they had a real good time walking the dead trees in the shelterbelt they nicked name the "walking trees". At one point they came running into the house telling me to come out there immediately due to they found Indian writing on one of the them.

Upon telling them it translated to "Pow wow tonight at Henry house" I got some strange looks and disbeliefs.
A few pictures of the kids doing what they do when I'm hunting.

Talk about big doe... WOW!!! LMAO at the broadhead in the mesh -- something always happens to keep it entertaining. :-) Glad the tracking jobs were much easier and size of the deer is still unbelievable... It would take 3 doe at Capote to equal just one of those. Congrats Cuz...

Awesome recap Wade, it looks like the kids had a great time and you had some fun yourself... Great pics of the kids and thanks for remembering the camera.

You going to freeze your butt off Greg but good luck. Lows of 18 and highs of 40 in forecast for Wed and Th. I can't wait to be back up there Friday evening.

I pulled up the internet weather yesterday and saw that Wade!! Gonna be frosty deer hunting. At least we can hang the carcasses and not have to worry a few days.

At least bird hunting we will be walking and keeping somewhat warmer following the dogs.

I look forward to this trip every year. I missed Texas but Loved KS while I was there.

Awesome job Wade. Hopefully this cold front will get the big boys up and moving. Good luck to you and Greg.

I talked to Wade around 9:00am and they were approaching Dallas. Roads had been fine to that point so hopefully they make it up to Kansas with no problems.
