I have been out of touch for a long time. What do you guys recommend for GPS/Fishfinders now days? Do you like the combo units or each one seperately? Lets hear some recommendations.....

Terry,
I'm using the Lowrance LMS-480 with GPS. The antenna is not built-in like the color unit, which I think is the LMS-332C. So you can't mount 332 it in the dash like the 480. So far I'm pleased with this unit. It's not like the old days when you turned your unit on and it showed fish everywhere you go. These unit's really do work. I've been crappie fishing with these units and when I see fish I catch fish. The same has been true when looking for drop shot fish for bass. The other unit I have on the trolling unit is the X135 which doesn't have GPS but I just starting have a few issues but I'm not sure if the problem is the transducer.

I agree with OZ. We have the 332c at the dash and plan to add one on the bow this year. The gps is handy but like all my electronic gadgets, I'm probably not getting 20% out of what it can actually do. Lowrance has a great service rep. named Linda Colt. She can and will help you with any questions.

Now, after saying all that, the new hummingbird units with the side-viewer looks to be awesome. I'm waiting on some reviews of this product.

Hey Dru,
I'm really not sure why the X135 started doing weird things but I noticed it while Crappie fishing. I just couldn't get it to read down at 45ft. Spent an hour pushing buttons until the whole unit was a mess. Now I just need to reset everything and start over I guess. I've also had problem with rain and very cool weather clouding up the screens, which it's not supposed to do but does anyway and always have even after sending them back to the factory once last year.

OZ,
Call Linda at 1-800-324-1356 and she might be able to help. I know you can reset it by pushing a few buttons at the same time while the unit is off.

Mine clouds up too. Ask about a remedy for this problem.

I have a combo unit (LMS330C) built into my console. If I had the money or could do it over I would have a two seperate units at the console. First being a graph and the next being for GPS/Mapping. That way you don't have toggle between screens all the time.

I'm also a big fan of color graphs.

Charles,
Yours doesn't have split screen? Also Terry I'm using a map chip which is awesome.

Thanks all for the info! Please keep the suggestions and thoughts coming. Right now I am looking at the Lowrance LMS 334C, LCX 25C and the LCX 26C HD.

Oz,

Yes I have split screen, but when you split your screen you lose that half of the screen which makes you lose details. I think it would be nice to have a graph at full screen and your map at full screen with out having to split or toggle back and forth.

Does that make sense?

OK, I see what your saying... I always leave the sonar little and the map big. I'm really only interested with what is coming across the line on the sonar, I use it almost like a flasher. By the time I see something on the screen it going past me or just under me if I'm trolling. I've done this with bass using a drop shot.

I am not sure how much more you get for the money between the Lowrance and the Eagle. They are made by the same company and I have looked at the specs for both and from what I can tell the difference in functionality/resolution are not worth the extra money. I could be wrong though.

I have been pleased with my FHS chip, the Elite is even better than the one I have. Now go to http://www.lowrance.com/Mapping/LakeMaps/index.asp and get the enhanced lake maps for the ones you are interested in. You will need to save them to a different SD card than the one with your FHSE card.

Does the card not contain the enhanced lake maps already? I thought it came with all the latest enhanced lakes + the other regular lakes. Thanks!

Dru,
I talked with Bob Ridgeway at Southwestern Parts and he told me that It can be reset like hard boot by hold in & Out and power up and it will reset the unit. I did that and it worked great this weekend. I could see the grass in very good detail. I guess I got it all messed up. I'm good now.

Sounds good OZ.

Terry, the card has a a ton of lakes on it. The free enhanced lake maps are of smaller less popular lakes.
