Chalk this one up to the ol' "It will never happen to me" syndrome.

My wife and I have never had a problem financing anything, be it a house, car, truck, etc. But this past week we were turned down for a loan to buy a boat.

Curious, we pulled our credit reports, and what we saw was shocking to say the least!

There was erroneous information about accounts, outdated information, accounts we DO NOT have, addresses where we've NEVER lived (in California of all places)!!! It even said we'd been to court and lost judgements against us (we've NEVER been to court for anything unless you count my wife's speeding tickets!!.

So, now we've had to retain a lawyer and he says it will probably take 3-6 MONTHS just to clear the false stuff off of there!

So now it is a lesson learned the VERY hard way.

Keep an eye on those credit reports.
Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

I hope everything works out in your favor and the lawyer can get it all taken care of. Also glad that you found it at a time that you were not in desperate need of a loan.

Hang in there, it will get better and thanks for the heads up. I pulled my report a few weeks ago and looked for this type of stuff.

FYI: Every person is entitled to 1 free credit report each year. I was able to print off a report from each reporting agency and it did not cost me anything.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Mike, How did you go about getting your reports. Is there internet sites or do you call the agencies?
If you're richer than me I think we're related. If you're poorer than me I know we're related.

I 99% sure this is the site I used. It looks very familiar. I remember the Annual Credit report statements as opposed to the "Free Credit report". Most of them are signing you up for something in order to give you a free report.

Free Annual Credit Report

I did not read the preface but it should say that it is your report that you are entitled to.

Sorry to hear that Rudy. HP lost a computer a year or so ago and all the people that had a 401K with hp got a year or 2 free with equifax. They monitor your credit and send you email if your credit card balance changes by X percent or if there is a credit check run against your account. I don't remember what the service cost per year but I have really been thinking about keeping it once the free subscription runs out.
