Well, I'm new here! Anyway, I moved to texas in March and have only done minimal fishing! This disgusts me. I just moved from Chicago. The new place and settling in has been a chore. I've only fished a few times all from shore. I'm dying to go. This is the first summer in 20 years where I haven't had the oportunity to fish. Main problem....no boat and I can't afford one right now. Too much on the plate. I'm in the Dallas area and want to find a place to fish. I'm looking to find a place rent a boat w/ good fishing. I like to eat what I catch. Don't like to eat Bass but I love to catch em! If thats not a conflicting statement, not sure what is. I figure you guys would know what I mean. Anyway...love to fish for Bluegills/Crappies/Panfish and love to eat them. Catfish too. Anyone know of any place where I can rent a boat for relatively cheap. I've been to a few lakes around here. Been on Grapevine, Lewisville. No fishing though..except some casting from shore. I found a lake which I'm REALLy interested in. Called Purtis Creek Lake. Anyone fished it. I've heard you can rent a boat out there, but I'm not sure. Anyone with any info, that would be great. I live in Dallas right by White Rock Lake. I've fished it, but I've been told not to eat anything out of it. Anyway, thanks in advance!

Welcome to the ramp Jay. Things seem to be a little slow in the site right now with the start of dove season yesterday. Hopefully they will pick up soon.

ramp

As far as Purtis Creek, great place to fish in the spring for bass and there are plenty of crappie and perch to catch of the peirs there. I think the boats they rent are paddle boats.

Most of your good bank fishing around Dallas will be during the spring when the fish move shallow. I started off up here around 1991 fishing the shoreline of Lake Ray Roberts and we would catch tons of bass and crappie in the spring. We also use to fish below Texoma dam in the spring and catch stripers and hybrids. Then there will be the sandy spring spawn run up the creeks.

I know that Rudey was talking about going to Ray Roberts and trying one of the park piers for crappie recently.

Hang around and more people will respond and hopefully we can get you on some fish.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

If you are just in need of wetting a line, give Purtis Creek a try. Also, you can rent boats at Lake Fork, Lake Lavon, Lake Texoma, etc... Texoma is a great striper lake, Fork is a big bass fishery, Lavon is a recreational lake more than anything but has pretty good sand bass fishing. Tawakoni has a little of everything.

Have you considered hiring a guide for a day to get out and learn the lake?

We recently did a group day at the lake and had a ball on Tawakoni, but I assume it will not happen again until the spring.

Let me know if you are going to rent a boat on one of the lakes and I will do my best to point you in the right direection. Most of what I do it bass fishing but I do hit the other fish during certian times of the year. Right now is a good time to be bass fishing though.

Welcome to the ramp Jay,,, if ya hang around here awhile I'm sure you'll be able to get on some fish. I'm down on the coast, kinda like the "token Salty". But I've seen some of the posts, these guys know what they're talking about. BTW, nice fish in your avatar. Pike or Muskie ??

Welcome - I know the feeling about not fishing - My new Ranger bay boat is still in the shop for repairs! Hopefully soon I will be able to get out and get some coastal pics for the board.

Hey Picou, I used to fish below Denison Dam quite a bit before I got heavy into bass fishing. Actually used to live 5 minutes from there and loved going down there when I only had 2 or 3 hours to fish. Caught some nice stripers up along the wall.

BB, I will be there right next to you insuring that your beer stays cold and available. I will also have my fryer and keeping you company. :-)

Tex, Wes and I had one morning on the wall that we would let the white bucktail drift to the end of the wall and wham... We were hammering 8 - 10 pound stripers for about an hour. One of us would be walking back up the stairs while the other one was walking down with a fish on -- real enjoyable. I have not had great success the last couple of times I have been there. Maybe we should get together for another try some time next spring and show Jay the area. I'm a half hour from the dam.

I'm about 30 minutes away as well. Haven't gotten the big surf rod out lately. I always had better luck when the flood gates were open. I've gotten into the 10 pounders two different times. Once I was throwing a 6 inch sassy shad up the wall and they would nail it as it drifted down. The other time I was throwing bucktail jigs with a leader and 2ounce weight out to the end of the middle wall. Would real it just enough to keep of bottom and wham they would nail it. Both times flood gates were open. Getting together sounds good. I'm off on thur, fri and every other saturday. I noticed you been bouncing back and forth with TBH as well. Tough life isn't it.

Much easier during the weekend to bounce between the two... :-)

When was the better part of the year to go to the dam? We did it in late March, early Feb and were told we were a little late for the big fish.

I never did it enough to pattern them that well. I remember catching the big fish in the spring time when the gates were open. I do remember people catching some big fish during jan. feb. when they were generating. people would be fishing down by the bait shop and would throw jigs under weighted corks. I tried it a few times and caught some little fish. Never could get into the big fish. Of course this is all 6 to 7 years ago. Might have all changed since then.

Well, thanks for the help so far guys. I have decided to hit up Purtis Creek tomorrow. Got some bait tonight and will head out tomorrow morning bright and early. Gonna try to get some bluegills/Crappie/Perch. Hopefully big enough to eat. Also going to bring out the bass stick just in case the panfishing is slow. We'll see how it all goes.
