Sometimes you see an opportunity and find yourself overly compelled to take full advantage of it. Thursday was one of those days where opportunities presented themselves and I just could not resist the temptation – daughters on spring break, seeing fish all over the place, and messing with a buddy – sorry Oz...

Anyway, the girls and I headed to Fork to complete the break in of the new boat and check out some new water for the upcoming tournament on Saturday.

Also, I had just taken possession of two new Hendrix Rods with my name on them and I was dying to try them out – a 782 & 844 series. We got to the lake around 9:00am and the fog was still thick as pea soup so we wasted some time at Rainswood Marina then launched. I could hear boats running the lanes but could not see anything so we pulled over to the shoreline at the mouth of Birch Creek and started fishing. I managed a quick bite on my Hendrix 70ML crankbait rod and in no time landed the first fish of the day. :-)

We worked around the point and the fog finally lifted so we headed back into Birch with the rest of the boat show. I knew where I wanted to go and plotted a course with the trolling motor to get there through all the stumps. Casually fishing through all the grass and stumps I saw a nice fish cruising around and told the girls about it. They quickly came to the bow of the boat and I jokingly commented, “I’m gonna catch her.” I flipped my split-shot rigged trick worm in front of her and watched it sink to the bottom. In no time, the fish went straight to the worm and inhaled it. I set the hook and told the girls, “Got her!” She came to the surface and splashed around then made a run for deeper water. This was my first fish on the new 782 rod and it handed her beautifully back to the boat where Jessica had the net in the water. I coached Jessica on net position and she netted her first fish.

I know what you are going to say, you’re just trying to sell rods… But let me express that I would speak equally as highly about this 782 rod even if I was not on the pro-staff. I have never fished with a more comfortable rod than this one. The feel is simply indescribable. I can’t wait to let each one of you try out this rod.

Ok, back to the story… : )

Well, while I was unhooking and releasing that fish I counted 6 or 7 more fish swimming around the edge of this hump. About 2 casts later Corey hooked up with her first fish out of the new boat.

I new I had a decision to make. Should we leave this spot in hopes that it did not get pounded before Saturday or go ahead and fish it now and enjoy the day. We decided to just enjoy the day. Since the fish were cruising around I thought back to a time when Wes and I whacked the fish on Purtis Creek with flukes in a similar situation so I put on a weightless fluke and on the second cast I boated a great tournament fish.

Another boat who had been fishing the shoreline came around and asked me what I was fishing and congratulated me on fishing with my daughters – being fathers of girls also. They were from Nebraska and Missouri and were here for the week. Fishing had been slow the last couple of days for them. I told them what I was using and they were not sure if they had any in the boat so I offered a bag of super flukes to them. We met up and I passed over a new bag and showed them how to split-shot rig the bait. In no time they were catching fish also. We stayed around that hump for another hour or so catching fish, including Jessica’s 2nd out of the boat.

The guys from out of town had a good fish on that broke off at the boat when they were trying to lip it. He told me it was probably the biggest they had hooked into all week.

Once that area slowed down we moved back to the pipeline and managed to boat 3 more fish – Jessica 1 & me 2. Her's was on the fluke and mine came on a Watermelon/Chart Flake Bass Bone by JDC Baits.

We decided it was time to put some more hours on the motor and complete the break-in so we bailed out of there and said good bye to our new out of state friends. We ran the boat from Birch around the lake to the back of Glade and then back. We stopped off at a cove to try out some new water I was pointed to and within 5 casts with the Bass Bone I had the first fish on.

We spent about a half hour on that shoreline and I boated 5 fish including this one that was slightly over 16 inches.

All of the fish boated on the JDC Baits Bass Bone were landed using a Hendrix 70M series rod. This rod is also another sweet product produced by the new rod company and is extremely comfortable to fish with.

We got off the lake around 6:00pm and headed home very happy. It was a great day on the water with my girls, we met some very nice folks from out of town, got the boat fully broke in, and caught a bunch of fish. We really did not keep count but my guess is 18 or so fish for the day. I had a great time and really like my new fishing rods. Mr. Hendrix has a great product and I look forward to a long relationship with him promoting what I feel is a great value product – No need to buy a G-Loomis when you can have as good of a rod (if not better) for ˝ the price. I'm also sold on these new baits I have been throwing by JDC. I'm catching a ton of fish on them and it really helps build my confidence.

Nice pics and report Mike. Boat looks great. Kids too. I'll stop there. :-)

We need to get together for a night time Texoma trip this year. Need to get some smallmouth breakin time on that boat as well.

I've got an April pattern that should work for you. I don't know if it will get a win but it should produce a solid stringer.
