I was talking with some folks at work about fishing on Fork last week and made a last minute decision to make a night trip because of the things that were going on around here this weekend. I asked a friend and co-worker who I used to fish a lot with if he was interested in joining me and he rapidly arranged his schedule to make it possible.

It had been at least 3 years since Cecil and I spent time in the boat together and this reunion of friendly fishing competition was not only a great time, but a lucrative event as well. You see, when ever Cecil and I would fish together there were three standing bets – first fish, biggest fish, and most fish. Each bet was worth a lunch and the last time we fished together it ended with me having to buy him a lunch. For years now I have been taunted with the reminders of that last trip and having to buy him lunch. Well, suffice it to say… I won’t have to buy my meal for a few days now. :-)

The evening started out with Cecil and I arriving at Ozzie’s place around 6:30pm and we found Ozzie and some of his friends crappie fishing and having a great time.

 Hi Ozzie

In no time I had the first fish in the boat with the split-shot fluke – lunch #1. We slowly made our way over to the Ozzie crew and Cecil smacked a monster crappie on a spinnerbait. We chunked him in the live well and attempted to bass fish while there was still sun light and I boated one more bass (a dink but a bass none the less). As the sun faded we made our way over to Ozzie’s boat and attempted to crappie fish for the next couple of hours and the only fish to show for it was a bar-fish caught by Cecil.

Convinced that the crappie had turned off we decided to go back to bass fishing. We started working down the shoreline and I picked up 2 more quick fish on a split-shot black/blue worm. Here is one of them.

 Mike1

Determining that we would not be catching any more crappie we decided to let the one in the live well go and snapped a picture before release.

 Cecil Crappie

As we approached a large stump all by itself I teased Cecil and said, “I left that stump for you.” He cast past it and his line went over the side and he confirmed that he was stuck. I started moving the boat to get it and he let the line go slack while we moved over there. Next thing I knew, he was setting the hook claiming he had a fish. I figured he was nuts until the fish jumped on the other side of the stump. We rushed over and he boated the fish. The fish was hooked deep and bleeding badly so we snapped a quick picture, cut the line and released the fish to heal.

 Cecil1

My lead on Cecil was 4 to 1 and soon he added another to the list making it 4 to 2. We fished on and I’m not sure the count in between but I eventually landed a solid chunk and solidified lunch number 2 with big fish – 6 pounds.

 Mike 6 lb

I picked up a few more small fish, increasing my lead and Cecil made a push for the big fish reward but came up a pound short with the beauty of a 5 pounder that had him wrapped around a stump. Cecil kept the pressure on her and when the line snapped free from the bark we thought she was gone but fortunately the line held and Cecil worked the fish beautifully into the net.

 Cecil 5 lb

I think I boated one more fish after that one and the winds started to pick up so we headed back to the ramp to load up and make the run home.

The final tally for the night was 15 fish including the 1 crappie, and 1 bar fish by Cecil. Oh… and 3 lunches for Mike

The drive home was tuff but we made it and put the wraps on a great evening/night trip with an old fishing buddy. Maybe this trip will rekindle his desire for the bass fishing and get him away from chasing them pesky (yet tasty) white perch. I have now also snuffed out the hall talk about him whoopin my butt the last time we fished together. Now he is only left with – “Remember 3 or 4 years ago when I whipped your butt fishing” :-) I had a great time and I’m looking forward to getting him back out on the water in an effort to not only put him on his personal best, but also build up my cache of meal tickets.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Mike, it was truly a good time and I look forward to fishing with you again in the near future. I'm going to the local creek to practice my bass fishing.... From the whooping "you" put on me, it's obvious my skills have eroded :-> Don't bring lunch Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. I want to pay off the bet ASAP, so you won't have the pleasure of taunting me with the debt I owe. Thanks again for the good time!!! -Cecil

I'm glad I don't bet like that with my buddies or I'd be buying lunch everyday for someone. Looks like a great night out way to sock em.

Thanks everyone.... It had been quite some time since I night fished on Fork. It was just as fun as it use to be.

Needless to say, the new skeeter has some beauty marks now Dru... It had to happen eventually. :-)

Hotrods, I'll chase them linesides as soon as you take me in your boat...
