So I am in the market to buy a couple of more reels. Almost all of the reels I currently own are the shimano curado reels but are the older style. It has been a while since I bought a new reel but man they have gone up in price. What reels does everybody recommend for bass fishing. What about the cabelas or bass pro model reels, the garcia revo or the okuma? All the reels I am looking at are the low profiles reels. thanks |

Wes, I'm throwing mostly the Shimano Curados in the older style. Some are over ten years old and still going strong. I just won a Chronarch DC but Vince wont let me use it. He says it is sweet. I also have a couple of the Quantum PT series and they are good reels. I bought an Ardent off Brian Snowden and that thing will cast a mile. I've heard good things about the Revo, but I have not tried one. You will probably have to spend $150 or more for a good quality reel or you could buy the kit to rework your Curados. Keep us inform on what you get. BassZone.com

If you like the old curados, get you a citica 100dsv. I am not convinced the extra cash for the curado is worth it for our applications. My next 2 will be the citica 100s. Same small form factor as the curado 100B. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish FTN Webs -- Affordable Small Business & Personal Web Sites

I have (2) Johnny Morris Signature Series JMX20HA that are the sweeeeetest reels I own. Prior to purchasing them from BPS during the Spring event this year I had only fished with Abu Garcia reels. I can throw a weightless fluke on the JMSS reel further then most people can heave a 1/2 oz rattletrap. The REVO STX-HS is top notch once you get it dialed in but they are pricy at the store 199.00. I picked one up on ebay for 148.00 a few weeks back. |

I have one of the black Revo SX-HS. The Revo is smooth as hell and throws as far as any reel I've owned initially. However the smoothness has went away. It still throws far but is just making a funny noise. ABU has told me to mail it back to them but you know I never have. My friend Gerald bought two of them and loved them but both of his went from one cast throwing great to barely throwing at all. Like it is just sticky. He did not try cleaning them instead going change them out for the next reel I will talk about. Now this is saltwater and are way over used. Kind of sucks due to I love the low profile of them. When I cleaned mine there was quite a bit of grease in it and the grease was gritty looking? I have a feeling they are just reels that have to have more grease than I'm used to and need cleaned more often. They are really easy to clean however. Gerald has bought three of the Quantum Accurist PT and loves them. Long throwing and real smooth. Kind of interested in long term life which I've never gotten from Quantums but this looks like a well built reel. It is a little higher profile than the Revo but has a flipping switch that Gerald really likes on it. Not sure what he uses it for though??? I just bought an ABU Record and it is sweet and for the price is great deal! But it is not low profile and have not tried throwing light lures on it but I'm sure it would handle it. The one issue I'm having with this Record is if you do backlash it, it does not come out?? I'm wondering if I'm not spooling line tight enough. Rob, you finding this with yours? As far as Shimano's all the locals I'm talking to are saying to buy the one priced under the Curado's now. Forgot the name, maybe Citica. Quit being a mad, little bald man! Dru this is for the 2 new hendrix rods I bought. I will be moving some reels around to different rods, but the applications I need these reels for is 1 will be for a swimbait rod, the other will be for a spinnerbait rod. Picou the citica has the 4+1 bearing system, the revo is 8 or 10+1. Dennis basspro has that reel on sale right now for 134.88 Wade do you ever clean your reels after fishing in that saltwater |

I do when going out in the bay boat but not a lot on the lease. The one thing I do not like about a lot of these new reels is they don't have the drain holes on the bottoms any more. I used to shoot them up with a little Corrosion X spray and did not find needed to take them down and clean as often. I feel the higher bearing numbers is the problem with many of these reels? They tend to be a lot easier to corrode than the lower number bearings. Someone was explaining it all to me but as usual was not really listening to what they were saying. I would think for swimming baits you would want a reel like a Record? They are pretty sweet for $129. Which rods did you buy? Either one would be one I would like for the fishing I would do? i bought 2 SX-HS and one SC. i threw a swim bait with the SX-HS last night and it worked just fine. this reels cast a mile. i am using the SC for flipping but i am sure it will work for other uses. there light and fit the hand perfect. when you put it on the Hendrix rod it is a light set up and can fish it all day with out being tired. www.fishermike.com www.ezeejig.com

Wes, for both those applications, swimbait and spinnerbait, I would reccomend getting the highest gear ratio possible. A guy here in the office loves the Johnny Morris reels and at that price they may be the best deal. BassZone.com

The Cruxis is supposed to be equivalent to the old Curado and the Citica is a step above that. All I know is the Citica 200 I have casts great, reels smooth, and has worked just fine since I bought it last year. I have casted a Johnny Morris and it was ok. I have pitched the Ardent and it was very nice. I would actually prefer if you get something totally different than I have so that I will get some feedback on if it is worth a crap... Bigun i did get them at academy for 149 read a post on the TFF where bass pro shop has them for 139. my SC has 2 trips to the lake and the SX has 1 trip. have alot more time to spend and hopefully they hold up. Bigun are you fishing salt water the majority of the time? dont know if that would be the cause of them getting sticky. I dont fish salt water so have no idea how hard it can be on reels. www.fishermike.com www.ezeejig.com

I was stuck on a stub and cranked down on the twiching bar and bent it into the reel. They are $200.00 in most cases cheaped on ebay and Academy OzzieFish "In GOD I trust"

Wes I picked up a Curado CU200DHSV recently, and it's all metal and built stronger than the older Curados. It's worth the extra bucks IMO. 6.1 retrieve and it can burn a bait like no one's business on top...FAST AS HELL RETRIEVE! Picked up the ABU Record 50 last year and it casts big baits long. 1 ounce of lead on my 7ft Fenwick hits 85 yards. As Wade mentioned, it can be a little finicky till you get it set for the right weight you casting. I picked up a another Curado 200 (older style) off EBay for half price recently for 80 bucks. Some good deals on EBay for Curados but I use a HammerSnipe to win my bids...with a maximum bid number. Congrats on the Hendrix rods. I've got one on order with some fancy diamonds Thanks Mike! Hey Wes, if you ever want to catch a few Guadalupe Smallmouths....let me know. I have 2 kayaks now and I'm finding them in Upper stretches of the river now. Triton, I mainly fish more brackish water with a little salt in it. It is not real hard on equipment. Truthfully we have not found many reels that hold up well. I think a lot of it is just the numbers of fish we catch. I bought my Revo off Ebay and while they claimed and appeared new out of box I wonder if it was not a repair job is why I was asking you that question?? I wish Gerald would have let me open one of his up to see if grease looked like mine did before cleaning. Pure salt water fishing especially if you are combining with sand is pure hell on equipment! Big, I repair reels and I believe the cause of your headache with the ABU's is tooooo much grease. I will breakdown new reels and reduce the grease. Most people put far too much grease in their reels. Is the stickiness coming from your cast or retrieve? The spools have a bearing on either end and the shaft runs through the spool and bearings. I have cleaned reels with grease on the bearings. Grease should not be there. If a little bit of moisture gets inside one of those bearings, it will run sticky. Too much grease on the gearing will make it tough to reel. I agree with you, the reels with too many bearings tend too cause heartburn. They always seem to run smooth in the store. It's when you use them after several trips that put proof in the pudding. ABU 5500 C3 are still workhorses. I agree with the other posters, dipping your reels in the water at the camp does not constitue cleaning your reel! |

Gerald was the one with the sticky problem and you felt it casting and reeling. My is just making a whining noise now that I've reduced the grease and oiled what book said to oil. It came out the box with way more grease than I've ever seen on a reel. Burke, Maybe it was you I was not listening to about the bearings? It sure would be nice if you lived closer to clean my reels! So I ended up getting 3 new reels. Needed another one after picking up the kistler rod we recieved with our entry at the skeeter tournament. 1 chronarch mg, a citica 100dsv and a revo sx. chronarch mg. Great reel, (like all chronarchs) don't like the wiffle spool though, I can almost cast it out of line throwing a weightless senko. I have this reel on a hendrix rod. It is spooled with 17lb seagaur(sp). citica 100dsv like picou said, reminds me of the old curados. Good reel. I put this reel on the hendrix swimbait rod. I will probably move it to another rod and put an older curado 200 on the swimbait rod. This reel is spooled with 65lb power pro. Revo SX. really suprised me. a little hard to get adjusted at first. Reel casts as well as the chronarch mg. This reel I put on the kistler skeeter tournament addition rod. This reel is spooled with 14lb halo. |

Good combination of reels Wes. I should have posted earlier on this. I got 2 Shimano Curado and 1 Quantum PT Tour. All three are the burners. Good reels. I will try other reels soon. Need to build up my arsenal a bit. A friend of mine has the Revo and has had no problems with it. Absolutely loves it. |

Hello everyone I wanted to let ya'll know what I have been told by the manufactures of a couple of reels. I sent a Bass-Pro reel to Shakespere that had the pfluger written on it, they sent it back with a note that said "this reel was not made by us Bass-Pro bought the Pfluger name from us, and had the reel made by someone else you will have to send it to Bass-pro for repair." Then there is Shakesphere I have contacted them trying to get parts NO Go they will not make them avalible to repair shops. I have spoke with Shane at Southwestern Parts and they told him the same thing. They have good reels, but you will have to send them in for repair. Some repair shops won't clean & Grease them because if you break something you can't repair it and we do make mistakes. Just thought I would let ya'll know. If that changes I will let you know. Good fishing |

I picked up an Offshore Angler series Inshore Extreme at BPS yesterday. Like I needed another reel. But I got to checking out all the reels in the line up (palm style) with them all on free spool. Adjusted all of them for a light free spin setting and just watched them whir. This little little reel beat all of them hands down on revolutions. So I picked it up, have no clue who made it for BPS, but it looks like a Lews (level wind pickup on top and exposed). 10lb drag and an all aluminum frame, 6 bearings. We shall see. The pile keeps getting bigger LOL! |
