My dad and I just purchased a new Stratos 175 with a 70 horse Yamaha. The boat shop stated for the first 20 hours we should run double oil by mixing oil with the gas is this typical?

Yes.

It probably is also suggested not to go over a certain RPM for the first few hours and that vary the RPM's every 15 minutes.

Breakin period is very important.

Charles is right!! Don't mess this part up by cutting corners. Be careful to follow instruction and your motor will last longer.

I'll agree with all of this. When I broke in my new yammy back in March I ran double oil for the first tank. For the first hour I was not to exceed 3000 RPMs. For the rest of the tank I was to varry the speed as I ran around the lake.

Break in is very boring and painful but it is important so just dedicate some time and get it taken care of.

BTW: Congrats on the new boat and welcome to "The Ramp"
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

I know that it is and want to make sure and get it done right. They also recomended varying the rpm's as has been suggested they never mentioned not to exceed any RPM levels. Going to get it on Alan Henry this weekend and see how she runs and mabey boat a fish or two.

I would recommend reading the yamaha manual that came with the engine. Do not take second hand (even from the stealership) information for this process. It is your responsibilty to understand and perform the proper break in procedures.

Post some pictures of your new ride when you get a chance.
