Alright I'm not new to bass fishing but I'm about PO'd with the topwater frog I've been fishing. I've been casting the BigFoot Scum Frog and the bass are tearing it up. I've lost roughly 8 bass fishing this frog and one of them went probably 5lbs (Guadalupe River = Good Bass). I've let them nail it and gave slack and hammered it home...nothing. I've hammered it right at strike...nothing. I've hammered it after waiting what seemed like forever...spit it out. So Bass Fishing gurus...help me out here cuz I'm sold on the frog but it's playing hell with my nerves LOL! Here's what it looks like. I don't know what it is..bad luck or something but I'm wondering if I should stick a trailer hook on this thing and simply lay out on the edges of the pads vice right in them just to increase my hookups? I haven't had one fish landed and I haven't fished a frog of this design till now. I'll switch frogs if someone has a better strike to hookup ratio they would love to share. These Guadalupe Bass love frogs..heck even the bull perch tear into them too.

My guess is the rod is too soft and you are not getting the hooks drove home. What are the specs on the rod? Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish FTN Webs -- Affordable Small Business & Personal Web Sites

Switch from the big daddy to the original scum from. The fish you are missing are probably grabbing the paddle tail. |

I agree with the above post. Are you throwing the frog on braided line? If so, you don't need much of a hook set. Also, you can take a pair of pliers and open the hooks up a little. Lastly, let them take it. At the bite, drop the rod tip and let them swim with the bait. I think a lot of times the initial bite is to the legs and then they turn the frog in their mouth. Agree with all of the above especially with Dru's drop the rod tip and feel for the fish swimming off. Quit being a mad, little bald man!

Thanks guys...I appreciate the feedback! I've dropped and prayed to them reeling the slack out and I do believe pliers and a little opening is the trick. Hooks are sharp, keeping them filed just right. Dru yes I will open them up a little and give those barbs a little more to work with. The barb ends are tight against the body and they have to really bite down to compress the rubberized plastic enough to clear the hook tips from Mr. "I can't miss a frog dinner" lips. PQ I've tried a couple of graphite 7ft blanks, Shimano, that are a little too soft I suppose? So I know what they need....my new Mike Hendricks fast actioned blank on my next trip on the river. Poor BTards will not know what's gonna hit them from above LOL! I just didn't feel right casting a rod I built for tarpon on the river. I'm learning that thought is out the scupper in a big way. I've been casting 10lb Suffix Elite. I might be suffering from a little stretch as is the norm with all mono lines as well as trying to save the day with a rod with a soft tip. Spine is fine but the first couple of feet may be enough for them to release before these darn "too tight barbs" have time to do their job? Time to go MANLY LOL! Darn bass have me all bent right now on this topwater bait. They are nailing it like crazy but I do believe my hook-set may be too soft. That is going to change now |

Rob, Be sure and throw a weightless senko as a follow up when you miss a topwater fish. |

Thanks for the tip Charles. Will do! PQ I was going to cast my white Fenwick (the old Florida Tarpon light tackle rod I built) but I felt it was too strong. The frog casts and flips great so a stout rod it will be. (Message edited by atthewall on June 19, 2007) |

Rob... Forget the frogs and go with the Skip-N-Pop My largest bass so far on these is 7-1 and she hammered a white 3 1/4" Skip-N-Pop. I have also caught several fish on the watermelon and the black/red flake. When the fish take it, give 'em a second then hammer the 4/0 EWG home...
