Some of you know that I have been hassling with my old boat motor. I needed to borrow it for this alligator hunt and I just picked it up yesterday and brought it home to get it ready.

Basically, I was unable to get the motor to run for longer than a couple seconds. I could dump fuel in the cylinder with a straw. If I yanked on the choke several times it would crank for a breif moment. No matter what I did it would not crank and stay cranked. I suspected the pump ball as being an issue so I went to get another pump ball. On the way in I called a few folks since it was a 20 minute drive there. Keith and Charles were very helpful and agreed that the pump ball could be it but that the carburator was probably gummed up as well. I had another suggestion to get some fuel conditioner and try to get that run thru there.

Well, today with the new pump ball I was getting a lot longer runs but it still would not stay running. So I took off the fuel pump and replaced the filter and checked/drained the pump them reinstalled. I verified that fuel was getting to the pump while in there.

That was not much of an improvement so I dove in head first and removed the carb assy. It looked fairly clean so I drained the bowl and ran some fresh fuel thru it to get any particles out of there. I put that back together and tried to pump the choke and although I can see the fuel going thru the hose, it was not getting tight. Again, I could get the motor cranked but it would not stay running.

In a last ditch effort I took the plugs out and sprayed some WD-40 in each cylinder and it fired up and ran for about 10 seconds but as soon as I moved the throttle it died. Again, I put more in and the same result. This time I decided to leave the throttle low and douse the cylinders again. This time it cranked and stayed running. I slowly increased the throttle and it started to bog down but I released the throttle in time for it to stay running. Eventually it died but it cranked right back up on 1 pull. I played this cat & mouse game and eventually got it running for about 5 minutes at idle. Still, anytime I increase the throttle it chokes out the motor.

I am going to get some fuel conditioner and more fuel to get it running again and just let the conditioner run thru the carb and hopefully it will clean out and get back to normal. If I can get it to run with some throttle, I will be runnign to the lake to run under load for a few minutes.

Wish me luck...

It might be a bad float inside the carb.

If that don't work, yank your trolling motor off the skeeter and put it the jon boat:-)
Dang'it Rudey,Greg and mike look like ooompa loompas from Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory up against Charles !!!!

Got it fixed. I went to plano marineand chatted with them and we decided it was the primary jet clogged. I got some cleaner, a new fuel line and headed home.

The line to the primary was very weak and partially crimped so I figured it needed replacing. I took the carb off, cleaned the heck out if it -- the primary intake was clogged with what looked like hose material. After cleanign the carb out vigorously, I replaced the primary hose and I tie wrapped every hose connection and went for broke.

I pulled the choke 4 times and it built pressure like it should. I grabbed the pull string and it fired on the first pull and stayed running. I had full throttle range and it ran just perfect.

I let it run for a while and then shut her down. I changed the lower unit lube and put everything away for tomorrow. I am looking forward to getting it on the water and running.

Thanks for the help everyone -- even you Rudey...

Now, hopefully it helps us get a gator...
