I slowly made my way up to Kansas with my nephew Duncan to get my kids. On my journey I stayed over night with PQ who was gracious enough to put me up one night and to deal with Connie the next day after we stayed up drinking until 1 am or so. She might not invite me back! :-) I tried his Hendrix rods and was fully impressed. I brought plenty of boudin so Mike grilled some up. Just an overall good time. Thanks to Mike, Connie, Jessica and Cory for putting up with my snoring!

My kids were lucky enough to get to spend around a month in Kansas with my parents and boy did they get the full effect of what farm life is all about. I got to the farm in Kansas and found my dad had gotten a calf from the local rancher for my kids to raise. They got Ferdinand when he was two days old due to his mother would not accept him some reason so my dad said he knew three kids who would love to be the mom's for a while. Ferdinand has been living in the dog pen with my dad's two labs and pretty much thinks he is a dog and will even eat the dog food.

One afternoon my uncle invited us to come down fishing with him on a family friends pond so off we went. My uncle was catfishing but we never got any bites. I imagine my 3 kids and nephew running all over around the pond did not help anything but Caroline did wind up catching one bass which she was extremely proud of.

It was funny to see what they use for jug lines on this pond. They just think it is hilarious to see the decoy running all over the pond. I think the solitude of farm life gets to your head sometime!

Other than that we just cut and transported wheat the rest of the week. Was hard to come back home but the fish are calling!

As always the turkey's were just thick in my dad's yard but were a little more skidish than normal due to my dad says my uncle was letting people hunt them in the yard. Saw a few hens with babies walking around but need a little more lens power for good pictures. Saw several good bucks already with velvet horns. Should be a good year with all the water and green forage around. A tornado passed within about a 1/2 mi of my dad's house and you can see in the turkey picture some of the destruction it did to a lot of the old cottonwood tree rows I used to hunt. Will definitely be popup hunting this year. I also went drive thru Greensburg with my uncle and man that is just total devastation. Hard to imagine worse but I have seen the area affected by Katrina but same eerie feeling. My prayers and thoughts to those trying to rebuild Greensburg.

That is some excellent coverage right there Wade... Looks like a great time and a taste of the farm life for the kiddos.

Sorry I missed your call when you were coming home, I had my phone turned off and just heard your voice mail today.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Speaking of money, you left $1.14 in change at the house along with some receipts. :-)

Great story Wade. Looks like the wheat made pretty good this year. Summers on a farm will shape lifes.

Thanks for sharing.

You can keep the change and throw the reciepts away Mike. :-)

Wheat harvest sucked all over Kansas this year from the news reports. Averaged about 30 bushels an acre and weight was way down. The local farmer we help was pretty disgusted over the fact that prices were finally up and he had bad crop. Wheat looked beautiful but just no berries on the heads like normal. He stated it looked good until the late freezes with the high rains in April.
