Went down to Padre Island National Seashore this past weekend, after some serious saltwater withdrawals I might add. Surf was pounding, sandy and not good Thursday. Stopped at the 40 mile area and setup camp and gave a few soaks a whirl. Didn't use the kayak to run baits out and opted to blast cast the old Fenwicks into the 2nd gut with fresh cut mullet. Chasing bait with the light rod was futile. Hardhead catfish every cast. So many in the surf in fact, I caught a half dozen throwing the cast net for bait. Had one good fish on for roughly 20 minutes on the ABU 7500CT Big Game. Fought fast and hard and then my line went absolutely slack. Reeled like made and gathered it up to find the fish somehow spit the hook? 16/0 Circle hook came out...a first for me.

So I opted to roll the full 60 miles to Port Mansfield Jetties. Got there and met a guy named Tom who was camping and surfing. Tom had 4 longboards and a big old 4x4 Chevy camper pickup. His report was, no one is catching squat anywhere down here. He was there 3 July to the 6th (Friday) but the surf was excellent.

Well I let Tom know things were about to change, Rob is here LOL! He laughed his butt off and simply stated "Good luck, I'll see if you can live up to that statement." So knowing this area like the back of my hand, I gathered up my backpack, assorted plugs, chrome and plastics and set out rock hopping.

An hour before sundown I started to catch huge skipjacks...ladyfish. These darn fish were so aggressive I couldn't hardly get my bait in my zone. 25-35 inch, huge ladyfish, clearing the water to 5ft on each jump. The Curado's drag was zinging like mad on 10lb test Sufix. Between Ladyfish, I managed to catch and release 8 redfish. I couldn't buy size if I had a million dollars this afternoon in the redfish category but that was OK, I was catching fish on my new Hendrix rod WOO HOO!

So here's my first spec on my new stick. It was the only spec of this trip, but what the heck, I wasn't complaining cosidering the fishing report for several days. Tom was impressed and I'm glad I didn't eat my boast....me and my big mouth LOL!

She took me into the rocks several times, so much in fact, she beat her belly silly. Fought hard, nice yellow mouth surf side spec. Not a bad first trout for the new stick :-)

During one of my many casts I noticed something dart out from under a rock and hammered my Mirrolure. Line peeling, heavy as heck and holding on forever. Finally turned him and low and behold I have a good sized loggerhead turtle. Thank goodness the lure somehow slipped off it's shell, no ill effect to the turtle and I still have my gear.

All in all I had a good time. Next following weekend, it's back down with my son Austin to join Drifter along the strand for some serious hardcore surf fishing. Weather should be right...fingers crossed.

I'll call you Will. It's a great time and your foot doesn't have to be top notch, it's easy on your feet working the sand anyway.

I'll come over Big Daddy, just say when and I'll go! Bob Thomas mentioned something about rolling your way sometime. Fly Rod fishing? LOL!
