To fish the Upper Laguna Madre in some areas I used to wade fish during my Coast Guard days there. This time, I'm kayaking these areas, covering a lot more water and exploring some of the deeper holes and island spoils. Several areas along the left shoreline are loaded with mud minnows, juvenile croaker, piggy perch, fingerling mullet and tons of brown shrimp. It's shallow in many of the areas here so boats tend to not loiter and prefer to use the channels to run out to other areas that are easily fished without running aground. In the top right side of this image, the horseshoe shaped sandbar, there are two deep holes. Access to them is too shallow to run in with a boat without poling up and in. Even then, when the tide falls, your stuck till the next high. I'm there! :-)

This area has a lot of redfish, tons of redfish. The Corpus Christi hatchery releases millions of them just to the left Upper side of this image at Naval Airstation Corpus. I've had days fishing this area, absolutely losing count with redfish numbers (well past 20). They are typically slot reds, 20 - 30 inch with a few up to the mid 30s and small guys around 15 - 19 inch. This same area was the scene of two of my three, over 30 inch speckled trout. The largest trout was 31.5 inches @ 8lbs in these waters. Caught her on a topwater Mirrolure with rattles. Trout was greyhounding a foot long mullet in an attempt to eat and made my cast right into the middle of the commotion. You play off nervous water here and your ears really come into play as you listen for the sound of baitfish scattering. At times the water boils with scattering baitfish and it's a race to get there quietly to connect. Deeper cuts that border grass and mud flats are key. Just a 1ft water depth change, feeding off a flat, is a superhighway when the tide starts to fall.

Waterproof camera is going along for this ride. All artys with bass tackle casting rods and sunscreen. Using the GPS to mark these holes so night time stalks, during the spring, will help me locate areas with fat specs (prime time).

This area is only about 10 miles North of Baffin Bay. Those Baffin specs work through this area between the Gulf and Baffin.

Parking on the Naval Base so I don't have things missing when I return.

Please have a safe and happy weekend!
