Well my well planned day on the Upper Laguna Madre had me scratching my head. The Nueces River is running hard out of her banks and she's dumping a ton of water into the Corpus Christi Bay complex. Had some large tides with more water on the flats making the fish pretty darn scattered. No wind, glassy water and HOT! Only managed on 19 inch redfish working about 1 foot and a half of flat. Needless to say, Drifter and I figured we needed to change plans and work a few rigs just off Packery Channel vice working our tails off in the Laguna for little to show.

So Saturday morning we motor out the Packery Channel jetties on Padre Island, and set a SE course to a five rig set 6 miles off the beach. We work a slow troll with a two rod set of ribbon fish. Managed one good sized Spanish Mackerel and I lost a 1 ounce RattleTrap, on my casting rod, to something along one of the many weed lines.

So we decide to simply tie off on one stick up rig and try rigged circus balloons for Kings and light tackle for everything else.

Pink doggie balloons was the hot setup this weekend.

This little Trigger Fish had her lipstick on.

Finally stillness is shattered with the sound of a Penn reel alarm absolutely on fire.

And one nice King hits the box

A few hours later another screamer

And a box pic just for BigUn - SON!

A quick cool off dip before heading home

What are the smaller fish in the chest??? Great coverage as usual Zabroky.

:-) Yup offshore at 6 miles. Just like out in the middle of Lake Fork with more stuff to catch.

Stones brother... Ya'll got stones!!!

Excellent recap and pics Rob. But the difference between the middle of Lake Fork and 6 miles offshore is that on the lake you will always drift to shore... :-)
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

You can't sink a Carolina Skiff..a float with an engine. Even if the motor croaked, we could drift fish the predominant SE swell and pick up a few pompano in that last mile off the beach LOL! Heck, you drift into the beach quicker than Fork when the winds and swells are right on the Gulf.

PQ you think that's bad....try a 25 motor surfboat, 200 miles from land, 10-12ft seas with 32 degree water temp, Bearing Sea Alaska ARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!! Drifter worked offshore wearing dungarees at one point in his life too. When I can't see the horizon, then I start to worry.

I just hope when that storm pops up the winds don't change to North Rob!!! :-)

I don't like going out to the rigs 2 miles off the coast in my 22 Baystealth. You Texans are nuts. You'd be trying to go to Cozumel in my boat!!! :-)

:-) Bigun I've been to 60 out in a 22ft dual 100hp AquaSport CC along the Virginia Vacaps. We hammered the Mahi Mahi in the Gulf Stream, on top of the canyon and picked up a few Kings and one White Marlin. Compass, waterproof chart and a VHF/HF radio with Loran C. Seas got to about 8ft that day but we were catching fish LOL! Yeah I admit, we were a little nervous but the dualies certainly made the engine situation a little easier on the nerves...just a hair AAAARRRGGGG!!!! :-) Just need to get back before nightfall so it's not so screwy trying to figure the inlet out. Chincoteague Inlet has a few towers on Nasa Wallops to home in on at 8 miles or so. Just need to get back West in the general area to see them.

Dropped one engine and trolled with the other. Changed the engines every hour with the off engine in freewheel. A wet day though so we had to wear slickers. Lord help me if I do break down and get a deep vee one of these days :-)

David and I analyzed the weather over a few beers the night before and the trends were the same as the past 2 days. Weather buoy readings and weather conditions through the last several days. TStorms over the mainland at mid-day with nothing offshore was the trend. Steady, light winds to 15kts and seas 1-2ft. A few 3 footers in there late afternoon, but it wasn't nothing to get worried about. If you go without following the weather.....not good. Gulf is warm, lifejackets are there and the boat floats if worse comes to worse. Stuffed a lot of fresh water in the boat and we had sushi for several days LOL!

If David ever gets that Hobie Cat of his rigged, we might troll for Kings in that dude several hundred yards off the beach. Surfing, sailing and fishing all in one ride :-)
