I went offshore with a group of folks weekend before last. We headed out of Port Aransas at 0600 and returned at 1600. Most of our fishing was done 35 miles off. We ended up with over 200 fish - red and vermillion snapper, amberjack, king, grouper, shark and bonita. It was a great trip. Sorry for the picture quality. The photo was not taken by me.

What a sea of RED!!! Looks like ya'll had a great trip Simek...

So, did they do anything to to the sharks to preserve them for the ride back in? They do not look to be gutted or anything. Did you keep any shark meat?
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Mike, they did not do anything to the sharks but throw them on ice. According to what they told us (I don't know squat about sharks) there are two or three kind that have urinary tracts that don't need preservation of any special kind, one of which is little black tips (which these were). We filleted them out, but have not eaten any yet.

Interesting info there Simek... I don't know for sure so I will take their word for it. Now if I could just learn how to tell the sharks apart... :-)

Thanks guys . . . I was told that Blacktips, Thresher and Mako are definitely eatable. That's about the extent of my shark knowledge.

Wes, I will definitely bring some fish to El Capote this year. Does that preclude me from the past obligatory case of Miller Lite?

Nice catch. I've made a few trips with Deep Sea Headquarters this time of year. My pics always looked a lot like that. Lots of kings and snapper and little bit of everything else.

Nice Day - Looks like ya'll went 60-80 miles out? I see Shark, Red Snapper, AJ, Grouper, and King?

Must have been a BLAST! Makes me ready to go out again. Maybe next week the seas will lay down a little and I can get out on Wed or Thur. Anyone want to go?

Holy moly Chris, that's a haul!!! Congratulations on a great day offshore!!!

All sharks should be bled and iced for the best quality. Their blood contains urea which breaks down to ammonia. If it smells like ammonia, its' not good. It might have a slight smell of ammonia and a soak in buttermilk or lemon will do the trick before preparation.

I can see buttermilk at Wes's ranch now LOL! YEAH RIGHT....A soak in tequila and lime is more fitting. :-)
