Dan and I went fishin Sunday and we had a BLAST. We ventured 45 miles out to the big blue!! Then hit state water on the way in for the rest of the snapper limit. The pictures tell all but to add - I cought the biggest Dorado I have ever cought and we did see the biggest Ling I ever saw but we could not get it to bite - the Ling would have been the icing on the cake as we can only se=estimate it was at least 80lb - to me - comparing it to the 49lb I cought a few years ago and Dan has a lot of experience at these things. Enjoy the Pics:

Sweet haul Dean. You getting the hang of that offshore fishing. I've been wanting to make a ling run but just not have had time to put it all together. Quit being a mad, little bald man!

DANG!!! That's a deck full of fish right there. Glad it was you cleaning them and not me! Congrats on what looks like a great trip out. I sure wish I could get down there and enjoy some of that easy life with you. BWT: Nice touch with the Corona bottle at the tip of the bow... Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Wooo Weee.. Those are some nice dorados and big snappers, you gotta love that.. How big is you boat Dean? I've ventured out 26-28 miles at the most in a 24'footer a few times.. if a storm comes up EEEEEK !! It can get hairy in a hurry. From those pictures it looks like great conditions. Congrats on the catch, and the Beer on the front is a very nice touch.. Billy |

Thanks guys!! Yea - I think going out like that is nuts too but a new offshore boat is over 100K and used ones are totaly unpredictable. I think I will buy an EPIRB - between the EPIRB and cost of an occasional tow I will come out WAY AHEAD$$.. Just hope I never need the tow, I try to keep the equipment in tip top shape - but you know how that goes. My boat is a 23' bay boat. The bow is too low and can take waves over the front in minor (3'-2') conditions. I've been in 4'-6' conditions and yes - seriously it was fun - but not something I would do on purpose. At least the Ranger stays on top even when swamped - I know from experience - just come down off plane, throttle up, and watch massive amounts of water roll off the back as the nose comes up. LING - Any tips on what might have provolked that ling to bite? Ranger:

BTW - If any one wants to go - I welcome you to go. I just ask for contributions because gas and bait aint cheap no more - just let me know when you want to go - as long as conditions are good enough. Sometimes if it is rough I might come in early but typically I have to be forced off the water by darkness, limits, or passengers. This day we put in the water at 7am and pulled out at 7:55pm. We covered well over 120 miles out there. The boat gets any where from 2.1 to 2.8mpg. Mostly 2.1 if my wife is not with me - If she is with me I have to slow down thus giving better efficiency. Ya know - Snapper season for federal water is closed as of 9-31-07 at midnight.. I hope to get out there 1 more time before then... Then we start Grouper hunting. a new task for me.. Dean, Did y'all have a 2-3 oz, big hair jig or some live bait for that Ling.. We used to pull up to shrimp boats, tap on the side of our deck or hull and watch them swim out from under the shrimp boat, them and chicken dorado's. Good luck on that last trip of the season.. Any big Kings still around? Billy |

Thanks for the tip - I do have some hairy jigs and I will try them next time. We were throwing back big and small kings - just kept the size we wanted. The water was so clear - we could see the kings and blues and sharks and what ever else swimming around and under us. If there were no limits we could have fed the city of - Spring - with what we saw - truely an awesome site. BLUE BLUE BLUE water. My second time to see blue water like that. All In A Days Fun!!!

8-10" live white trout Dean. Hook them in between the head and the mid back where the trout swims down kind of like a crankbait when you pull on line. Nothing like it for ling. Mullet will work also but is second on my list when targeting them. Quit being a mad, little bald man!

Dean when the water is like that, I can't take my eyes off the wake of the boat once we're under way.. I love that color. Mike, that's a hoss in any body's book. Man, you guys are getting me all jacked up !!! August and September are my favorite times to fish the Blue water.. The hotter the better. The kings aren't too bad when you bring them in the boat, but with 2 dorados on at once and their jumping around every where it can get crazy.. I just club the snot out of'um once the gaff is in'um.. dayum things will flop all over the boat if you don't. Billy |

Nice AJ - I went out on one of Elliots boats and I was the only one who did not get one up - fishing a reef. We used live hard tails. Some were over 65lb... Them fish get big.. I'll bet you were tired after cranking that puppy up!! Wade - White trout? you mean sand trout? Man - I don't know where to get them.. I willl have to start looking into this. I think I can catch Mullet with my cast net before we get to the ramp and we can buy piggy perch too. Maybe I will try to be sure I have a few of each on board each time I go out - just in case. I wish I would have landed the ling - It would likely have placed well in the CCA Star tournament... Dang!!! "PQ - Seeeee - I am not the only one wearing the cool looking full protection big brim hats!!" ****That's just plain smart***** I can have the best tan possible and the back of my neck will peel every time. I started wearing bandana's around my neck for protection with a big brim hat too.. Big piggy's are my Fav's !!! and large Crockers. Live bait is a pain, but both of them are easy too keep. Billy |

That fish was on a piggy perch off a rig. We started up the motor to pull away. After 30mins my arms were aching. It was fun!! we lost three other to the RIG... I've been watching the FLW Red Fish Tour and I'm ready to do that!! I've never caught a red fish before!! OzzieFish "Glory to GOD in the Highest"

Well done Dean! The Bullreds (brutes) will populate Padre Island National Seashore at the end of October. The beauty of catching them in the surf, you also catch huge sharks and casting artys, small reds, trout, pompano, ladyfish, bluefish and spanish macs. Float a live bait on mono, maybe a tarpon too! I'm going at it hard core this year as we move further into fall. The best fishing in S.Texas is October - November inshore. |
