While being boatless this fall I have put all my focus into the new deer lease. I was very disappointed on opening weekend of bow season when I didn't see a deer in 3 days of hunting. I finally made it back this past weekend with hopes that the hunting would be better.

I started off hunting my feeder and did not see anything for the first day and a half. The next morning I finally had a nice young 10 point come in. This deer was originally going to get a free pass but I was so frustrated by the tough hunting that I was ready to shoot anything. He ended up walking through before I could even get drawn back. The next morning I saw a young 5 point and let him walk.

I finally came to the conclusion that the deer were not coming to feeders. I had hand corned another area of the lease where there was a good rub line. After checking my camera I found a nice buck was eating the corn in daylight hours. I setup my matrix and waited that afternoon to see what would show up. A half hour to dark I hard something walking in. I peered through the cedar trees and saw a massive rack coming my way. I did my best to calm down and sent an arrow into his front shoulder. I heard him crash after a short run and I had my best buck to date. He is a main frame 10 point with 4 scorable kickers. Here's a few picks.

The recovery site.

Cleaned up version.
buck 2

Another angle.
buck 3

He had some extra character as well.

Excellent deer Tex... Very much worth the wait and hopefully that is a precursor to the Hagerman hunt... I look forward to hearing the results.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Well guys, Hagerman is in the books and I had mixed emotions when it ended on Sunday evening.

I got my doe and automatic re-entry on the first morning. I couldn't have wished for a better start. I was seeing a lot of deer and felt it was just a matter of time before a good buck showed up. Saturday evening I had a 160 class 10 point at 15 yards and shot him high above the vitals. I had aimed a little high due to him standing in some brush but didn't think about him being closer than my 20 pin. The shot went high and appeared to do no damage. Another guy and I saw him for up to a half hour after the shot and he never showed signs of being hurt.

I hoped he would show again on the last day but never saw him again. I'm sure he will survive and I hope to get another chance at him next year if he makes it past the segment C hunters.

All in all it was a great hunt. I saw 33 deer in 3 days of hunting. The weather was a little hot but the deer still moved in the early morning and late evening. Thanks to Robert(hawlin bass) for helping me clean my doe at his house on Friday. He saved me a lot of time that I would have been out of the woods.

Congrats on the doe and re-entry Tex... Sorry to hear about the 160 but it happens and you are right, he will be just fine. Better luck next year over there and keep your head up for the rest of the season.

Just in. My buck that I hit high was killed this morning at Hagerman. They are talking all about it on TBH. Turns out he is a 176" net 10 point. My buddy confirmed my wound when he looked at it today. I'm currently reliving the disappointment. Then again I'm glad he survived to be seen again. I know the guy that shot him. He's a real good guy so that took away a little of the sting. Hopefully they'll get pictures up soon so you guys can share my disappointment.:-)

GULP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see now why you mucked up the first shot... I would have probably shot myself or released the arrow at half draw... :-)

The other guy who shot a 170 class buck (named above) was over at Matt's house tonight to show him the buck. My taxidermist buddy is doing the mount so I will have to go see that one soon. He is also doing the 208" that was killed in Grayson county this year.

Thanks for the link Tex, that is an awesome buck and a huge congrats to the hunter.

Misery loves company heh Dave. I don't think I could do like you and go look at him in person. I would probably break down and start crying. I hope you get drawn back in next year. I'm going to need help dragging out his big brother. :-)
