anyone have any ideas or knowledge when it comes to floundering lights? i'm interested in doing an underwater setup. Finding submergible lights is proving to be a challenge. thanks!

I have done my fair share of flounder gigging on the Texas coast so hopefully I can help. Is there a specific reason you want underwater lights? I assume this is going to be a boat rig and not a hand held device.

BTW: Welcome to the site...

Yes, this is for a boat rig. My current setup projects too much glare and at times seems underpowered. It works but I'm just exploring my options. here's a pic i found on the net that shows a nice setup. boat

I have never gigged from a boat, we always walked with lanterns. At one point I tried a submersable light on a pole (sealed fog light) and it just did not illuminate the area like the lantern. Also, I have never had success gigging in any water deeper than about 10 inches. Maybe it was the poor lighting, but even during good water visability nights it seemed to me that the higher concentration of fish were shallower than a boat could go quietly. I assumed it was because that is where the food source was. Heck, there are so many possible situations/variables I guess that either tactic has it's good and bad times. We did not gig a limit ever time we went but we always got a few

The first place I would check for lights is West Marine. To run that many lights, I would assume you have to have an alternate power source. That is a "boat load" of current being consumed there.

A year ago, a buddy of mine and I set out to create the perfect night fishing light. After looking at various options, we ended up using the high intensity LEDs and a 12 volt source. The LEDs draw mili-amps of current and produce tons of light. You could string 5 or 6 clusters on the bow of the boat and I bet you would have more light than you need without the need of a generator. You could run these all night long on a charged up deep cycle 12v battery. Cost wise, the LEDs are a buck or two each and you need some series resistance to reduce the current to prevent blowing them up. We used PVC end caps and sealed the LEDs into the holes to make them water resistant. Water splash will not snap the LED because they do not get hot enough but we wanted to keep water out of the caps. Technically, you could submerge these, just not very deep. Also, there is very little glare from the LEDs

I will try and put together a schematic for a cluster of 4 w/ part numbers and information.

For bow fishing, my buddy uses those clamp on lights from the hardware store with 12v bulbs in them. He runs 4 of them all night bowfishing and the trolling motor.

In my opinion, either of these would work for flounder gigging depending on the water conditions.

I usually launch in Port O'connor. As far as stating a specific location, I have no idea. My friends and I kinda just head south toward Rockport and see what we can find. We have a few spots that we usually try but they won't get better for another month or so. We're amatures when it comes to this. This is my first boat and its still a learning process.

What do you think about the LED lightbar idea?

My last flounder gigging trip was to San Louis Pass a few years back in September. It was amazing. The flounder were all over the place popping the surface chasing bait. It took me about 30 minutes or so to get 8 nice fish on the stringer. I decided to stop at 8 that night because I was still going fishing off the peir under the lights. We stayed in a beach house for the week and I went to the pass 4 times that week. That was the best night. I got 4 another night by myself, 1 when I took my wife, and my brother and I went another night and ended up with 12 or so I think. Biggest while gigging was 19 inches while the biggest while rod & reel fishing was 21".

Here are a couple of pictures from the nights by myself:
That quick night of giggin:

Giggin then a trip to the lighted pier:
peir and giggin

I do not get to make it to the coast much since I live in North Texas, but I grew up fishing down there and really miss it. I may have to make a trip down to the pass again this September and see if I can string a few more flounder together. I really miss walking the shallows searching for them.
