To all,

As the subject implies, I have a honda civic. 2003 four door to be exact. I am about to install a Yakima roof rack so I can haul some fishing gear.

I'm having a little trouble deciding between a kayak or inflatable pontoon. A good buddy of mine has a few of the pontoons and he loves'em. I've been out on the 12 footer once and was impressed (he has rigged it for bowfishing but thats a whole other thread). I've heard a lot about the pontoons being terrible in the wind. He doesnt seem to think its such a big deal. Also, you can get a sweet little anchor system for those things.

To those of you thinking about getting rid of your truck, because of gas prices, DONT DO IT. I traded my F-150 for this civic about 3 years ago because of the gas prices. 32-35 mpg is nice, but I can't tell you how much i miss that truck. They're nice for the guy who likes to do his fair share of fishing. I'm planning on getting another one in about 1-2 yrs. But for now, the roof rack on the Civic will have to do.

Is there anyone else out there that is currently doing what i want to do, with the roof rack and pontoon/kayak?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

I have a friend that has a Hobie Mirage kayak. It has a pedal system on it that works really well and is pretty fast. He has it rigged out with fish finder, rod holders, etc. I've been thinking about getting one myself. But, Hobie is proud of that thing and you could probably swing a jon boat for the price. It would strap to the top of your civic though. Good Luck!

With gas prices right now I'm think about selling my Skeeter and leaving it attached to my truck.....maybe get a floating house boat on Fork. Gas prices suck!

I've never seen the pontoon boats but a yak would surely be doable. I've never fished from one but seen many people do it.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Go Kayak and expand your horizons! I have a pair and lean heavily on an Ocean Kayak Frenzy for the Guadalupe River, Upper Laguna Madre (flats) and the surf zone on Padre Island National Seashore. It is one of the best fishing investments I have ever made.

Small ponds, all rivers, bays and surf zone are open and free to fish. Light enough to portage and launch anywhere.

I will pick late summer days and fish offshore in the Gulf. Out there, several hundred yards off the beach I've scored fish I never ever would have dreamed of scoring. Working the Guadalupe River, the option of finding unfished areas is infinite! During the past year, fishing the Guadalupe River from my kayak, I've scored bass in the double digits, got into rainbow trout yesterday as well as another fat bass pushing over 6lbs.

Even lakes are easy enough to fish, on calm days working tight to cover...no noise, they don't have a clue you are there..silence is golden, most particularly in skinny water.
