It's been a month since my last Guadalupe River outing. So yesterday I decided it was time. Temps the evening before dropped to 28 degrees and the daily high was bordering mid 60s. There is a stretch of Lupe that has stocked rainbow trout and considering the previous evenings low was prime for active trout activity and a warm up feed for bass...don't know till you go.

So off I go, dropping in on yet one of my favorite upper Lupe sections for an afternoon of cast and study.

The first fish of the day. I didn't expect a charty double bladed spinner bait would find my first rainbow, yes my plan is starting to shape up! This is my first Guadalupe Rainbow trout ever. I've always wanted to get into this game, just never could put it together before. I'm game now LOL!

My next fish was a very small largemouth, no pic, released. Fish number two, another rainbow on the double bladed charty spinnerbait. This guy got airborne 3 times, literally jumping up above my head sitting in the kayak. The colder temps have them active and acting like the rainbows I've chased out West before.

So I stick with the charty spinnerbait, I know it's not the best for rainbows but I know there has to be a fatty green fish somewhere and I'm destined to find her.......BAM there she is! She was hanging out under a dock deck and I missed the first strike..short hit. So one more cast with a deep sink slowing my retrieve to a point, I'm ticking the bottom....a nice bend and YES!

Then back to back, another pair of green fish.

Tiger stripes. Very cool!

The sun starts to settle and I note the rainbows are now feeding on the fly hatch boiling the river's surface. So I shift gears and change out to a Mepps style spinner and start fan casting. I lost literally 5 trout, several hammering the lure right as I was pulling the lure out of the the water, line so short the first jump pulls the hooks free. WOW THIS IS FUN!!!! One fish was so close to the kayak grabbing air, 3 jumps up and over my head.....wished I had waterproof video.
The last pair.

My day's catch is 6 green fish, 5 rainbows and 1 fat pumpkin seed perch.

I am dialing in this river in a big way. I have yet to explore sections to the South of Kerrville, over time I will go there.

Texas is God's Country!

Great job Roberto... That hawg is either ready to pop with eggs or she has been feeding really well on all those rainbow trout... :-)

I did not expect the trout to be that nice sized in that river but they have surely grown well. Did you keep any rainbows for the skillet?

Great coverage Rob and thanks for posting the pics and taking us along.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Thanks guys and Mike, yes these guys did not go back into the river. March is probably the last realistic month they can survive. Once it warms, all bets are off. I fished this section on my last Lupe report and the trout were way off on bite. I think the key to river trout is, a very cold night with the following day on a warm swing. That was my thought and I suppose I figured it right. Simek wonders how in the hell I find so many acorns LOL!

Mike one of these days you need to simply get over here. I have a lot of water to cover below Kerrville. Some of the sections are deep with a lot of structure, slow flow current. I'm finding the areas with real slack water adjacent to deep holes are were the fatties are. It's amazing how big some of these river bass are. I lost one last July that literally had me bent out of shape. Tossed the trap on the 2nd jump :-( I haven't fished her area since that day and I'm thinking it is time. It's interesting to note, once you find their hangout, if you blow it, they are there again on the next trip. The river is a little different, the prime areas are small so there are only so many places for them to hide bar major floods.

Mike I had my FishingTexas.net hoodie on this go round. :-)

Nice! I'd love to get out there with a flyrod and a cork popper tied on. I grew up on a small river. We didn't have trout but we had plenty of smallies. It's fun getting a hold of a fighter with light gear... Looks like you had a fun day. Congrats.
