Just wondering how many of you feel comfortable fishing deep? If not, why?

I know some will go deep for strippers, crappie, even catfish.. But why not deep for bass in the summer when the fish are bunched up in HUGE schools??

I think for alot of people it has to do with being able to see what they are casting at. for me is has more to do with reading the electronics and having trust in what I am reading. I actually prefer to fish deeper water rather then beat the bank. Some of the clearer lakes around austin we do tend to fish deeper then I did when I fished the lakes around Dallas.

My problem is that I have never given the time to the deeper (20'+) water like I have 15' or shallower so my confidence is in the shallower water. Every time I move out deep I may pick up a fish or two but it never pays off like it does for you Billy. If I can ever get out there and make it work, just one time, I will be able to reproduce it.

For me, it all boils down to confidence in the water and the presentation.

Summer fishing is my favorite time of year to fish. I pretty much excell this time of year fishing anywhere from 15 to 30 ft. deep. Besides, its the best time I can throw my big C-rigs around!
So my answer is YES, I feel very confident fishing deep!

Deep fishing is something I really need to do more of. I'm so geared at shallow fishing that I just never look behind be. I love pitching so it's hard change when you know you can grind out a few by pitching docks, brush or cattails.

I found a old sumerged bridge in 40' of water last weekend. fished it for thirty minutes and caught nothing but crappie. :-(.
So I went back to the bank.
I really wish I could get away from the bank and fish deeper. It just takes SOOooooooo.long to get the bait back to the boat.
I know,Iknow...Mike. "I need to slow down" :-):-)

Sinkey, wheres your duck camp on the River? We hunt the river pretty much every weekend and alot during the week (if I can get away). West of Texoma or east?

Last year was slow for us on the Good ducks....but one hell of a teal shoot.

You run a mud motor or airboat?

Airboats.
Our place is in Lebanon, OK. West River of Texoma. Right by Hickory Creek.
Yea, we had a crappy big duck shoot, but like you said murdered the teal earlier in the season.
We have a new thing, since so many yahoos are hunting up there in the mornings, with guides or by themselves, we go Striper fishing in the mornings, and shoot those "goober" ducks in the afternoon.
Goober= peanut field ducks coming back to roost on the river.
Besides, nobody is out there in the afternoons.
We need to get together this winter and go fill the straps. We always have a place to stay, right on the river!
Just dont buy Oklahoma beer!

Man thats crazy. We hunt all over the west end of the lake and river. We usually put in at Haleys in lebanon or Hickory creek. Its gotten so bad you have to watch going throught that cut there at lebanon to get out into the river with guides picking up customers and regulars going out

Yeah the hunting up there has absolutely gone to sheet lately. Last year the day before opening day. We sat out at the mouth of Hickory with two other airboats and two mud motor boats to just watch people trying to stake out spots for the next morning. My grandparents live on Texoma and my great uncle used to have a lake house ther in Haleys in lebanon. I wish they planted the peanuts like they used to. Man it was nothing to go shoot 35 mallard drakes and 7 others, but those times are prolly gone for good.

You all run a Silver Dollar boat or what and what color. We have two a new large silver dollar boat painted matt green and a older smaller silver dollar that is silver one of Harolds old guide boats.

We will definately have to go shoot some quackers....come November I'm pretty much up there every weekend chasing the bucks or the ducks.

Yes, Harold built both boats we run. Our first one was an Air Ranger. But the new one is Harolds. Both boats were like a Desert Storm camo pattern, tan and brown. I dont have mine anymore but we still use Steve's all the time. It was sinceless to have 2 up there. I even bought a Pro-Drive a few years back but never used it and sold it also. Steve is normally the first one up there so his boat was always hooked up. It was good to have 2 incase one broke down.....which seems to happen quite a bit!
I know which boat your in. Harolds boats are easily noticed and theres not to many of them up there.
I just remember when we had one of the first 4 Airboats up there, now at 2 in the morning, it sounds like Nascar out there!
Your hunting right there with us. Our camp is between the store and Lebanon ramp on the right side before the road makes both those sharp turns. We rarely put in at Lebanon anymore, mainly use Hickory or Wilson ramps.
Yea, since they quit planting the goobers the last few years it has sucked. But before that, lake 3 years ago, it was sick!
Do you know Harold, Dale, or Justin? Dale and Justin both guide up there and both hang out at our place alot. Mainly Justin though, since Dale lives here in Plano.
We definately need to get together and shoot some beeks off this year.
I look forward to it!

Ol Betswina yea I know him and Harold. Harold is building us a new boat now and should be done pretty quick. I know where you all stay....I think there is usually a blue suburban hooked to yalls air sled right? My great uncle owned the house two doors down to the left right next door to Mrs. Haleys....the reason we have two really is so if somebody wants to go deer hunting. There are some monsters up there.

Harold doesn't do much duck hunting around there anymore but him and Flippo still do some deer hunting in that area. Last year they camped there by the ramp at lebanon and were deer hunting. Did Dale hunt much up there last year? The guy who runs the black air boat that's Harolds old boat doesn't duck hunt, he goes up the river a ways and deer hunts pretty close to where I deer hunt. You probably have seen his dodge there all weekend cause he camps way up river.

i know what you mean by the first two airboats up there. I have been hunting up there since a little kid with my family and you used to be lucky to see 5 groups now during the week you can see 5 groups. When Pickens was alive and his brother in law Kenny Clue were guiding up there they used to advetise it way to much and now all the hunting forums and net sh@t everyone found out about it.

Thats whats good about haveing an air boat sometimes you can get to places that the mud motors and duck boats can't. Last year we hunted a place where you actually had to run on dry land for probably hundred yards to get back to a little hole. But like I said shot some big ducks mallard, sprigs but mainly gadwall and teal. The only thing is you didn't have to get up at 2 and go stake out your spot.

No, thats Zeds camp where the blue suburban is. We are actually....follow me here. When you turn to go down to the ramp by the store, you go down about 100 yrds past the little church, but before you get to the first sharp left turn. Our place is right there next to all the boat stalls. Theres ALWAYS a fire going out back at night! Nothing like it being cold, having a beer in one hand, smoke in the other, and steaks cooking behind you. All while letting your feet burn by the fire!!!!! , Im ready to hunt now. I just wish the ducks would get back in there. Im not making anymore trips up to Kawl this year!
Good luck on Harold getting your boat out QUICK! If him and Allen are bowfishing, it will never get done! We got some good video at camp from Harolds place. Boxing matches, getting drunk, making baits, etc. Harold has his own Redneck Disney World at his house.
Steve's new boat has all the bowfishing lights built in around the front and has the gun/bow boxes on the side. Its a freakin TANK! He just had an EFI put on his motor, so we shouldnt have any of those cold morning starts this year.

Next time you see "Speed" tell him Sinkey and Hickman say Hi!

I will for sure. Oh ok I know where that is. Yeah those guys are nuts about that bow fishing, have you seen how they get those boats in and out of the trinity (freaking nuts). Speed don't get in a hurry for nothing does he.

I hope they get back in there too, last year pulled the boats all the way to kansas to get into the mallards not good with a mix of big trucks, air boats, and gas prices the way they are. Cost us a sheet load but whacked the mallards.

Alot easier dumping the air sled at Haleys and running 5 min to get em.

Shortly after my lab died I quit duck hunting. That was also a couple years after it went back up to 6 ducks and the general public decided that duck hunting was the "in" thing to do. I hunted Fork mostly and finally got tired of getting up at 2:00am just to get to my spot before anyone else just to have some idiot come in at the crack of dawn and set up 75 yards away. Top it off, 80% of the hunting population then could not blow a duck call and scared every duck in the county away. If they happened to get some within 100 yards they were sky bustin everything they could shoot at.

It just was not fun anymore so I quit. Both of my girls went on their first duck hunting adventure when they were 3 years old. They learned that when i said "Cover" it meant for them to cover their ears. Once the dog would bring the ducks back to the boat the girls would sit there and pet the dead ducks.

I miss duck hunting sometimes but cannot get excited about dealing with all the idiots. Still have about 8 dozen dekes sitting in the shed.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Me to, I have about 100 + Deke's still in net bags at my Dad's place..
My brother an me hunted Lake Winnsboro, Quitman and Lake Fork in the early days when a lot of the timber you hunted in was still green and in the water.. Birch LOOKs nothing like it did in 1985.. If you've seen it back then you know what I'm talking about
It was my biggest passion from 14 yrs old until 1989 when they went to steel shot and the number dropped to 2-3 birds depending which one you shot.. Idiots were growing in numbers, so I laid my gun down and have never picked it up again..
That's a shame too, I really loved to duck hunt. It's a social event in a way, you don't have too worry about scent or smoking in the blind and there's always plenty of B/S to go around.
AHHH---- the good ol days.

Yeah I hear yall, its a lot more work than it used to be, Fork has some good hunting on it up in the very Northwest arm where the creek runs in but you bet your arse there's gonna be a croud.

Sink, I saw that blind out there in the middle of Hickory pretty close to the tip of the island last year. Whomever built that did some serious work man. We hunted out of layouts opening day over by what everyone calls Texas Point.

I think Dale built the one on the island.
Ours were normally out in the middle in open water. We would drop everyone off in the blind, go park the airboat, and kayak back to the blind. Thats some work, especially if you were the kayaker!
Texas point was good as were the cliffs last year. We hunted a few time up Hickory, but mainly hunted over in the bay. You know when you come out of the cut at Lebanon, take a left in the river and take the other shoot on the right over to the bay? Thats where we found more ducks this year. But we had the airboat blow up one morning. I think Harold just stuck bubble gum on something to fix it before, so Justin had to tow us out. Always exciting up there. Besides.................
I HATE THAT MUD UP THERE!!!!!!!

Yeah we did some hunting over there, the water was high enough early to hunt our layouts then the water dropped so quick the mud became insane, Yeah last year was the first year for our green boat (brand new) and Harold put a bad altenator on it We guessed cause both batteries died when we turned the boat off way up the river almost to 35 and put in at lebanon. The current was so strong that we floated all the way back to the cut in lebanon 4-5 hrs....you talk about a mad mother, out other boat was in Plano.

Oh well you learn.

You ever deer hunt around that area?

Sinkey, yanks gotta bust on ya for this one. That ain't deep this is deep:

We have been taking fish 20 miles out from Point Breeze NY from 100' depth of the lake all the way to 700' just by watching the temperature of the thermalcline. Several boats have been taking mature 20 to 25 lbs steelys in 41.0 to 44.0 degree water, which is below the bait marking on the videograph. More oxygen in colder water, then they rise to feed.
Maybe all I know about him is that he was a fine fisherman.

Deep is all relative I guess. Bustin on sinkey just to give folks here a different perspective of what deep means to Great Lakes folks. There are local lengend deep water GL fishermen that year after year catch em day after day during the summer pattern when no one else can. To me these guys are the best deep water fishermen around.
