Ok this is my first bass boat and have a question about props.
I have a 1990 Ranger 365V.17'10" long. It has a 4 blade 13 1/4" x 27 PP prop.The motor is a 1989 Johnson 150.

I have GPS'ed it at 59.7 with just me in the boat. With one other it drops to 55.3.
The whole shot stinks :-(.
But I really would like to get more out of the top end.
It will get to 55-57 pretty quick, but to get up to 59 it takes a mile or two.

What can I do to get a better whole shot, and not lose top end? Can I get more top end?
It's rated for a 175. But I don't know if that would be worth the $$$??
Thanks
shaun

You might try a 25 pitch 3 blade. Sometimes if you go with too much pitch it can actually slow you down, with props there is a delicate balance that is usually reached by trial and error. I am no expert but that sounds like a too much prop for that engine. With props you need to hook up with a good prop shop and they will let you try different ones out to see which one will work best. Good luck!

I agree Terry, 27 is Too Much.. a good 3-blade 25 will pop that boat right up and out, and still maintain the top end you desire, along with higer RPM's that boat should turn a 3-blade 25 @ 5800-6000 max
Engine height and setback play a huge roll too.
I'm no expert either, but I would borrow a couple of props from a reputable shop and make some test runs and listen to what they have to say.

I would like to look into some prop modifications on mine as well. The holeshot on my boat is great but top end with 2 guys in the boat is 58 - 59. I would really like to get into the lower to middle 60's.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

I found a couple props from friends around here that will let me use to see what I need.Is there any certain "brand" to stick with?

Oh I also found someone with 5 blade 24" prop.I'm guessing since a 3 blade would be better for me, a 5 blade would be going the wrong way?

Oh, also what range shoulkd I be keeping the motor at at top end? I had some just tell me not to get it over 5500 rpm???

Man.....so much to consider..Whew!

Yup,
I just called Steve this morn'. I have a new "Picasso" prop on the way!!!
Thanks for all the help.

Looks like the motor has been way over propped.
After speaking to him at length I'm going to try a Raker 24p 3blade that has been massaged by Steve :-).

I have a 4 blade Renegade on my 150. It will push my boat 65 (gps) with tourn load. More blades = beter holeshot, less blades = more topend. Ranger is the heaviest boat, made for smooth ride. If you want speeds over 65,buy a different boat.

WOW,................
I just got back from trying the new prop.
Man what a difference!!!
Not really sure how going from a 4blade to a 3blade gave me a better hole shot. But it did! It's a lot better then I had expected it to be.STEVE'S THE MAN!!!!

Steve said something about a larger hub would give it a better take off and he was right on.

The top end I think I lost a mph. I was doing 59.7 before. I'm doing 58mph now. I think it would go faster if I could keep it from getting squirrely?
If the lake was dead calm I could see what it would do.(like that ever happens).
With this newer prop it feels like the boat is mostly up out of the water?
When I hit much any kind of wave at almost full trim(5500rpm) it rocks from side to side pretty bad.

So what does a jack plate do? I mean I know it raises the motor and sets back. But why does that help?

Loose is fast.....learn to drive through the chine walk and take it up to 6000 rpm.

jack plate will set the motor back and give the prop more bite (cleaner water) and change the angle of your trim. Not sure but you might get some speed out of it but it will make your boat handle better for sure.

Cleaner water, also it makes the motor think(you could say) the boat is longer and pop's up on pad faster, less drag, means more speed.. There is a trick to driving thru Chine walking.. Can't explain it to where you would under stand what I'm saying.. It's a show you thing..

Get a new Skeeter and the chine walking goes away... :-)

Glad you got the hole shot cured and are more satisfied with your boat. I may need to stop by Steve's one day when at the lake and talk to him.

I asked Steve about a jack plate. He said it would be a good idea. But first to see if I could just lift the motor.
Turns out I still have about 1 1/4" that the motor can be lifted.

Skeeter- I may have to meet up with you if I can't get a grip on the walking. Thx.

We aren't all rich little bald men like you. :-)
I do wish I could afford a new Skeeter. Maybe if I get good enough at fishing........Yea right :-).

On a side note: I thought it was pretty cool that this gentlemen could have sold me a jack plate right off the bat. But instead offered a possible cheaper solution. VERY COOL in my book!!!
He's got a repeat customer. :-)

Well I just got back from the lake. I lifted the motor one set of holes like Steve said.
It still pops out of the hole great. It almost all chine walk is gone :-).
I got up to 60 but had to shut herdown because of 4th of all the 4th of July boat traffic, and it being such a small lake.

The only thing I'm not sure about is the motor now will turn like 5700 RPM. I have been told to keep it down to 5500?? Not sure about that rating.
Does anyone know for sure what a 1999 Johnson 150 is supposed to top out at.
