What has worked great for me in Missouri is a small feather jig that very closely resembles the color of the crawfish in the river -- brown & yellow in this case. Match the hatch with light line and you will be ok.

What part of NM.....went to Red River, taos, and cimmaron in june.

You gonna fly fish or egg fish, both were great, we caught our limit every day.

We actually went into the fly shop and asked what fly they were hitting the best and the lady set us up on the money bait. This would be my suggestion on how to really get into them.

Red River.
Do you have to use a fly rod to use a fly? I think someone told me once you dont. I cant cast one and I have no desire to learn! lol
Any "technique" help would be appreciated.

I use ultra-light with 2 - 4 lb test and ultra small baits. You can get away with more in the moving water from a line stand point. You may even want to try a floro but I use low vis green mono on my spinning gear. I would love to learn how to fly fish but unfortunately there are too many other things that I have to take care of.

I don't know about that we always have but youre right it really sucks because most of the streams aren't really wide enough to use a fly rod.

The best technique was a small hook, small split shot on 4 lb line with either earthworms or eggs.

Go to the fly shop right there on main in Red River and they have eggs and worms and everything you need.

The best fishing was around the camp grounds north of town.....find a eddy or log jam and you can load them up. hope this helps man its a blast

Thanks, Zeeter, I will definitely try the campgrounds. I got some good tips from the guy at BPS, (shout out to Cliff) He travels to Red River quite often. He even gave me a little lesson on techniques, etc..
BPS is expensive, but I could never get that kind of service from Walmart. :-)
