The top water bite is starting to turn on. In the last two days we have caught good numbers on a Stanley Ribbet. There are a lot of good fish still in the shallows and with all this rain there is a lot of flooded grass which makes it perfect cover for fishing a Frog. The color Frog that has worked best for me has been Watermelon and Watermelon Pearl. The Buzz bait has also been good. The one I like to throw this time of year is a 1/8oz White and Chartreuse Skirt, this bait may be little but the Bass here on Lake Fork will eat it up. Good places to fish the Frog and Buzz bait are in the Lillie pads that are starting to bloom. There are good numbers of Bass protecting the fry in these areas and they will jump all over these baits when you get it close to them.

The deep bite is also coming on strong. The bigger Bass we have been catching have been in 10 to 20 feet. Best baits for catching these deeper Bass for me has been a Shad colored DD22 Crank bait and a Carolina Rig. My set up on the Carolina Rig is a 3/4oz weight with a 2 and a half foot leader, best baits on this Rig have been a Watermelon Seed Brush Hog and a Watermelon Seed Fluke.

Darin Breedlove from Dallas fished with me today. We started out fishing the Frog and Buzz bait and caught several 3 and 4 pounders. About mid morning the top water bite slowed and we switched to the Carolina Rig and moved out deeper and on his second cast Darin caught one that weighed 8lbs 4oz. This was Darin’s biggest Bass that he had ever caught but things were about to get better, much better. With in the next 30 minutes he put two more Bass in the boat that were over 6 pounds. Then in the back of the boat his Dad Buddy Breedlove set the hook on a bass that was also over 6 pounds. We fished this spot for about another hour without a bite so I said lets move to another spot and give this one a rest.

We went to the next point and with in the next 5 casts Darin put two more in the boat a 7.4 and a 6.8. After that he said it does not get any better than this, but on Lake Fork it can, and it did. We fished this spot for about another hour and 1/2 without a bite so I decided to go and hit that spot one more time where Darin caught the 8 pounder. We pulled up to the point and on his first cast Darin set the hook and he said, “this fish is big” and after a fight that seemed to last forever, I got the Bass in the net. This Bass weighed 10 pounds 8oz. What a day. Darin’s best 5 Bass was over 39 pounds and broke his personal best two times in one day.

Congratulations Darin on an incredible day. It was fun watching you catch all those big fish. All these Bass were caught on the big Watermelon Seed Brush Hog, 15 feet deep on a secondary point. Good places to try are the mouth of White Oak Branch, Wolfe, Bell Branch, and Taylor Branch. May and June are always good for numbers and size. The Bass are coming off the spawn and they are hungry and looking for something to eat.
