Jeanine and I were lucky enough to go to Puerto Rico to visit my son and his wife and while there get a little fishing in. We chartered with Makaira Charters and had a blast. We started the day catching bait fish and giving Fred the deck hand a bad time about throwing the net. After we had about 300 sardines in the well we took off to Rincon Point. This is a 150' to 1200' dropoff about 2 miles from shore on the West side of Puerto Rico. Freelinning live Sardines we banged fish right away. Bonito and BlackFin Tuna mixed with a pesky Barracuda that was well fed when we left. The sky rats stole some bait and were a real pain when hooked. After we had a box of Bonito (bait) and some nice Tuna we headed to Desecheo. An island about 18 miles out. While trolling we had multiple Wahoo hookups and a couple more Tuna. The day was setteling down when we came across 5 nice Dorado looking for a hand out. Fred tossed a couple net fulls of sardines out to get their attention and then the lines went out. Boom, we had 4 Dorado on the hook. What a mad house as two of the Dorado were hooked on very light spinning reels. I had mine on a TLD50 with 50lb line and was able to horse her to the boat pretty fast. In the mean time the 3 others were doing the Dorado dance around the boat trying to keep the lines from getting tangled. About 30 minutes later 2 Dorado came to the boat one was lost by the line catching on the bow and getting cut off. The other was lost at the Gaff. We still had a BIG Dorado on and Jeanine was getting a work out. She was fishing with a med-light spinning reel with 12lb line. The Dorado fought for 1 hour and 52 minutes before she was able to free herself and head out to the big blue. Jeanine was really dissapointed but her and the fish did a great battle at sea and there will be a next time for sure. By now the flat seas had kicked up and a storm was moving in so we called it a day and took Jeanine in for a well earned cocktail.
